Slimmers’ 5ps and 10ps raise £25k for Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity in just three months

Summary

Slimming World’s 900,000 generous members have raised £25,000 in just three months for Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity. The money will go towards some of the essential refurbishment and redevelopment of the hospital’s new cardiac ward.

Slimming World has set themselves a target of raising £150,000 for the charity over the course of this year.

Slimming World donates 10p from the sale of every healthy recipe book, and its members are invited to drop small change from their weekly £4.95 group membership payment into Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity branded donation boxes. The collection boxes have been available in all 16,000 of Slimming World’s local community groups.

Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity is a new partner for Slimming World in 2017 and, this year, the weight management organisation’s 900,000 members, 4,500 Consultants and 300 head office staff are raising money to support the hospital, as well as Cancer Research UK and the Irish Cancer Society. In 2016, Slimming World raised a life-changing £2.5 million for its charity partners.

Johanna Mather, who manages Slimming World’s national charity partnerships, says: “As the UK’s favourite way to lose weight we really want to change the world for the better. We’re absolutely thrilled that our members, Consultants and head office staff have raised so much money in such a short space of time for this incredible new unit, and we’re so pleased to be able to support GOSH which offers first-class, life-saving clinical care to seriously ill children from across the UK. This donation shows that the small change donated through our ever-popular recipe books and colourful new donation boxes - created using artwork by children who visit the hospital - really does make a big difference.

“Now this fantastic first milestone donation has been made, our fundraising will continue and our aim then is to raise a further £125,000 to buy a vital piece of equipment – a brand new, high-resolution cardiac ultrasound machine for the hospital. The equipment will have huge benefits for even the smallest of hearts and we’re delighted to be involved with such a worthwhile cause.

Amit Aggarwall, Director of Corporate Partnerships at Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity, says, “We’re delighted that Slimming World members have raised £25,000 so far. The money they raise is making a real difference to seriously ill children from across the UK and we are very grateful for their support.”

Notes to Editors

Slimming World was founded by Margaret Miles-Bramwell (OBE, FRSA) in 1969. There are now more than 18,000 groups held weekly across the UK and Republic of Ireland via a network of 4,000 community-based Slimming World Consultants, who receive specific training in the role of diet and physical activity in weight management, as well as sophisticated behaviour-change techniques.

Slimming World’s healthy eating plan, Food Optimising, is based on the science of satiety and energy density. Our phased activity programme, Body Magic, eases members into activity until it becomes an intrinsic part of their daily routine. The principles behind Slimming World’s philosophy are based on a deep understanding of the challenges faced by overweight people and a recognition that those who struggle with weight carry a double burden, the weight itself and a burden of guilt and shame about their weight. Slimming World’s programme integrates practical, up-to-date advice with a highly developed support system based on care and compassion, and Consultant training focuses on facilitating behaviour change in a warm and friendly group environment. Consultant training is delivered through the Slimming World Academy. Slimming World also invests in a comprehensive research programme to develop its support for long-term weight management. The group support provided by Slimming World is recognised as effective by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) and the NHS.
