Slimming World's 228k steps for Cancer Research UK

Staff at the Derbyshire-based Slimming World HQ laced up their trainers at the start of August and marched 228k steps to launch the Walk All Over Cancer with Slimming World campaign in aid of Cancer Research UK.

The 60 employees, who work across a range of disciplines at the company’s head office including website development, IT, nutrition, marketing and even writing for Slimming World magazine, were celebrating the launch of the national Walk All over Cancer with Slimming World campaign.

Walk All Over Cancer with Slimming World is a national event taking place across the organisation’s 16,000 community groups throughout August. Slimming World members are being encouraged to pledge a daily step total and get sponsored to hit their target over the month by fellow members, friends and family. The campaign aims to boost activity levels and raise vital funds for Cancer Research UK.

The Slimming World employees kicked off the campaign with a 3km walk together around the local estate, followed by a delicious summer feast cooked by the talented restaurant team at the company’s Alfreton headquarters.

Slimming World’s Marketing Co-ordinator, Johanna Mather, who leads on the national charity partnership, says: “Come wind, rain, snow or sunshine, nothing stops our head office staff from coming together for a great cause! We enjoyed a lovely walk together around Somercotes Park and the local area. There is a fantastic team spirit at Slimming World – we really are all in it together – and it’s great that so many of us join forces for events like these to raise funds for Cancer Research UK, while having fun along the way”.

“Our lovely catering team were waiting for us at the finishing line with delicious summery refreshments. They look after us so well here at head office and always manage to whip up a delicious meal at every occasion!”

Notes to Editors

Slimming World was founded by Margaret Miles-Bramwell (OBE, FRSA) in 1969. There are now more than 18,000 groups held weekly across the UK and Republic of Ireland via a network of 4,000 community-based Slimming World Consultants, who receive specific training in the role of diet and physical activity in weight management, as well as sophisticated behaviour-change techniques.

Slimming World’s healthy eating plan, Food Optimising, is based on the science of satiety and energy density. Our phased activity programme, Body Magic, eases members into activity until it becomes an intrinsic part of their daily routine. The principles behind Slimming World’s philosophy are based on a deep understanding of the challenges faced by overweight people and a recognition that those who struggle with weight carry a double burden, the weight itself and a burden of guilt and shame about their weight. Slimming World’s programme integrates practical, up-to-date advice with a highly developed support system based on care and compassion, and Consultant training focuses on facilitating behaviour change in a warm and friendly group environment. Consultant training is delivered through the Slimming World Academy. Slimming World also invests in a comprehensive research programme to develop its support for long-term weight management. The group support provided by Slimming World is recognised as effective by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) and the NHS.
