While most of us know that alcohol contains \u2018hidden calories\u2019, which are often higher than we realise and don\u2019t fill us up like the calories in food. What you might not have considered is your \u2018tipping point\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.slimmingworld.co.uk\/group-or-online-membership\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"122\" src=\"https:\/\/www.slimmingworld.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/SmallCTA-BelieveInASWChristmas25-SlimmingWorldBlog.jpg\" alt=\"Believe in a Slimming World Christmas - Join in the festive fun\" class=\"wp-image-14363\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Reaching the \u2018tipping point\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The tipping point is the point at which drinking alcohol tips us into drinking and eating far more than we ever intended \u2013 and it can impact hugely on our weight. In fact, our research revealed that it can lead us to consume, on average, an extra 6,300 calories in food and alcohol over the following two days. The study also found that half of those questioned reported cancelling physical activity they\u2019d planned for the next day in favour of watching TV, staying in bed or spending time on social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Average tipping point for men = 4 pints of beer<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Average tipping point for women = 2.5 glasses of wine<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>88% of Slimming World members surveyed said they\u2019d learned new ways to make healthier food choices after drinking alcohol<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>More for members: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.slimmingworld.co.uk\/\">Slimming World members<\/a> can easily check the Syn values of their alcoholic drinks using the handy online food search tool or the barcode scanner on the Slimming World app<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Making simple swaps<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s no reason to give up alcohol completely, unless that\u2019s something you want to do. Here are some simple swaps and strategies to help you cut down, while still enjoying a tipple or two:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Alternate alcoholic drinks with soft drinks or a glass of water.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make simple swaps such as switching from stout to a low-calorie beer.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Measure out drinks, rather than guessing \u2013 this can be a real eye-opener!&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make short spirits last longer by adding more mixer \u2013 or opt for a white wine spritzer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Swap to small wine glasses \u2013 some large glasses hold up to a third of a bottle!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Decide in advance how many drinks you\u2019ll have. You could ask a supportive partner or friend to help you stick to this.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Try to have at least two alcohol-free days a week.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid drinking on an empty stomach \u2013 eating a healthy, filling meal beforehand is a good idea.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>86% of the members we surveyed for our \u2018tipping point\u2019 study said that they still enjoyed alcohol in moderation and continued to lose weight steadily&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Slimming World member Ian found his healthy booze balance and lost 10st. He says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI started gaining weight from the age of 20 \u2013 all I cared about was work, going out drinking, and eating junk food. At the time, I wouldn\u2019t have said I drank in excess, but I also didn\u2019t consider the calories I was having when downing pints of lager or cider. Although I\u2019d never touch a full-fat cola, thinking it was packed with sugar, I\u2019d happily down a pint of lager without even thinking about it. I\u2019d go on to eat more than I intended, too, often grabbing a takeaway pizza on my way home from the pub. In February 2019, I weighed over 22st. Government health guidance says that we should limit consumption to no more than 14 units a week \u2013 that\u2019s around six pints of beer, six medium glasses of wine or 14 measures of spirits \u2013 spread over three or more days to help keep the health risks from alcohol to a low level.
