{"id":3434,"date":"2025-07-17T13:33:59","date_gmt":"2025-07-17T12:33:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/slimmingworld.wpenginepowered.com\/blog\/?p=3434"},"modified":"2025-07-17T13:34:00","modified_gmt":"2025-07-17T12:34:00","slug":"making-changes-that-stick-this-summer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.slimmingworld.co.uk\/blog\/making-changes-that-stick-this-summer\/","title":{"rendered":"Making changes that stick this summer"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Committing to losing weight can feel daunting when we start to think about\u00a0changing\u00a0the way we eat, drink and exercise \u2013 it doesn\u2019t need to be, though!\u00a0At\u00a0Slimming\u00a0World,\u00a0we base our weight loss plan\u00a0on a deep understanding of the psychology of slimming.\u00a0Our\u00a0powerful combination\u00a0of group\u00a0or online\u00a0support, a generous,\u00a0flexible eating plan and a\u00a0step-by-step\u00a0activity\u00a0programme\u00a0has been helping members to form\u00a0healthy\u00a0new\u00a0habits\u00a0for 55 years.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We want everyone to feel fantastic, so Slimming World\u2019s special advisor on the science of weight management, Dr Jacquie Lavin, is sharing her five top tips to help you make changes that you\u2019ll <em>want<\/em> to stick to \u2013 leading to a great weight loss and a lifestyle you\u2019ll love.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.slimmingworld.co.uk\/nearest-group-search\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"122\" src=\"https:\/\/www.slimmingworld.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/PorkAppleBurgers-Group-SummerGenericCTA-Thin.jpg\" alt=\"Click here to find your nearest Slimming World group\" class=\"wp-image-9051\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Take small steps<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Deciding that we want to make some changes to help us feel happier and healthier is a fantastic start. It\u2019s the next part \u2013 sticking to those habits \u2013 that can be the bigger challenge. However, little changes can quickly add up to a healthier lifestyle. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jacquie Lavin says, \u201cTaking small steps and having something to aim for can bring you tangible results \u2013 and seeing those results makes sticking with it easier. Adding an extra portion of vegetables to your evening meals every day makes them healthier without too much fuss.&nbsp; And, if you want to be more active, starting to build up gradually, for example, getting off the bus a stop earlier or taking the stairs instead of the lift, will give you a sense of achievement and reinforce your promises to yourself. Sharing your plans with fellow members at group also helps with commitment and motivation.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/slimmingworld.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/AaronOnHill-ChangesThatStick-SlimmingWorldBlog.jpg\" alt=\"Slimming World member Aaron hiking a mountain\" class=\"wp-image-5385\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Aaron has lost 9st with Slimming World and built his activity up to an amazing achievement \u2013 completing the Yorkshire three peaks challenge and running the London marathon! He says: \u201cAt nearly 27st, I couldn\u2019t walk up the stairs without being out of breath. Seek powerful support<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Being on the same journey as others can be incredibly motivating and Slimming World groups are the ideal place to find like-minded people who have been through similar ups and downs to you. Sharing these experiences will help to build a strong bond and give you the inspiration and motivation you need to make those lifestyle changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jacquie says, \u201cOur members tell us that the time they spend with their friends at group each week is an opportunity to reflect which helps them to feel geared up for success.&nbsp; As well as the recipe and activity ideas and tips they get in group, the support they receive can help members to understand themselves as slimmers, too. Chatting about any challenges in a Slimming World group helps members to better understand their motivations and needs. They discover their own personal danger zones and find solutions by planning ahead.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Slimming World Consultant Rachel made habit-changing a focus in her group, saying: \u201cWe talked about changing habits, taking small steps and pinning new habits to existing ones so that they stick. Everyone in group shared a habit that they\u2019d like to change and went away with a plan of action.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Love your routine&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDoing something regularly is the key to making new habits stick,\u201d says Jacquie. \u201cFitting something into your routine and doing it frequently will make it feel natural going forward. Adding a weekly batch-cooking session or putting workout in your diary could be a good idea, too, as making an appointment with yourself can make something more likely to happen. Talking to your fellow slimmers about your plans also helps to reinforce them.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our member Heather has a smart strategy to help her eat well during the school holidays, she says: \u201cI feel like our routine has been flipped on its head! Plan for challenges&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When you\u2019re making a lasting lifestyle change, it\u2019s normal to hit obstacles. Accepting this and being prepared for it will help you to move past any bumps. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jacquie says, \u201cLook ahead and think about what may get in the way of your progress, then consider how you could overcome these stoppers. Having a strategy ready will help you to keep going, while visualising yourself facing the challenge and putting your plan into action will help you to overcome it when the moment arrives.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Being kind to ourselves, at all stages of a weight loss journey, is key to success. If you feel that a fear of change is holding you back, looking at your core reasons for wanting to slim could help. In Slimming World groups, members are encouraged to think about and share those deeper reasons and often find it helpful to talk through scenarios and find possible solutions to try.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Slimming World Consultant Colz says: \u201cOne of the important things to know about creating new habits is that they have to be rewarding and enjoyable. I decided to take the dog for a walk to a coffee shop and treat myself to a drink too. Enjoy walking on sunshine&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Summer\u2019s here and the time is right to&#8230;&nbsp;be more active!&nbsp;To help make any new&nbsp;behaviour&nbsp;something that you do frequently, it needs to&nbsp;fit&nbsp;in with your lifestyle and match your personal&nbsp;preferences.
