Type 2 diabetes is a major contributor to kidney failure, heart attack and stroke \u2013 and there are currently 3.4 million people with the condition in England, plus a further five million at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>To show how we can help, we\u2019re sharing Helen Rogers\u2019 inspiring story. She joined Slimming World after struggling to control her diabetes on her own and, with the support of her Consultant and fellow members, she learned how to enjoy eating out while keeping her slimming plans on track. I was taking nine tablets a day: six to manage the diabetes, two for my blood pressure and one statin for cholesterol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019d dieted on and off for my entire adult life but the weight always crept back on as I slipped back into old habits. I worked from home so I was often on calls and I\u2019d usually grab something quick like buttery toast for breakfast and a sandwich and crisps for lunch, then I\u2019d cook a meal for tea. Although I rarely ate fried food, takeaways or sweet foods like chocolate, I was a big fan of savoury snacks like crisps, nuts, crumpets and crackers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" src=\"http:\/\/slimmingworld.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Body2-HelenRogers-SlimmingWorldBlog.jpg\" alt=\"Helen Rogers 8st weight loos transformation-type 2 diabetes case study-slimming world blog\" class=\"wp-image-3843\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>MORE FOR MEMBERS: Is snacking sabotaging your slimming? I was incredibly nervous as I entered the room for the first time, however the Consultant\u2019s kind and reassuring tone made me feel more at ease. Weighing in at 20st 8\u00bdlbs, I decided I was going to give this my all and see where it would take me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Eating out \u2013 the Slimming World way!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I was surprised by how much I enjoyed joining in conversations with the other members in group each week. Their encouragement kept me motivated, and talking about the week ahead really helped me to plan for events that could throw me off track, like eating out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the past, I\u2019d come home after a meal out and feel like I\u2019d blown my slimming plans because I\u2019d eaten more than I\u2019d intended. Our <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/member.slimmingworld.co.uk\/features\/eating-out\"><strong>guide to eating out<\/strong><\/a><strong> will help you spot the healthier menu options and put you in control of your slimming destiny<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Life free of diabetes medication<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I had blood tests this month and I\u2019m chuffed to say my latest diabetes blood results are 41, which means my diabetes is now in remission.\u202fMy cholesterol looks good, too, so while I still take one tablet for my blood pressure and another for my cholesterol, I\u2019m off all my diabetes medication and have dropped from nine tablets a day to just two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I used to avoid exercise, but Slimming World\u2019s Body Magic programme inspired me to move more and I go out of my way to walk to places I&#8217;d have driven to before. Now I walk 10 to 14,000 steps a day. I have so much more energy, I&#8217;ve even joined a gym! I\u2019m able to get up and down the stairs a lot easier and, as I\u2019m now a size 14\/16 (compared to a size 26\/28 before), it\u2019s also far easier to buy clothes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m delighted that I\u2019m healthier having lost weight, and I\u2019m especially glad I managed to reverse the diabetes.\u202fI\u2019ve recently got a new part-time job \u2013 before I didn\u2019t feel confident enough to even look for a new role, so I\u2019m definitely excited to start this new chapter of my life in the New Year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cover has-background-dim\" style=\"background-color:#d72661\"><div class=\"wp-block-cover__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-cover-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-large-font-size\"><strong>Helen\u2019s day on a plate<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><strong>BEFORE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><strong>Breakfast:<\/strong> Toast thickly spread with butter.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><strong>Lunch:<\/strong> Ham, cheese or tuna sandwich (granary bread with butter) and crisps.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><strong>Dinner:<\/strong> Cooked roast dinner with gravy, or chicken and frozen chips, sliced bread and butter.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><strong>Snacks:<\/strong> Crisps, salted nuts, crackers.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><strong>AFTER<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><strong>Breakfast:<\/strong> Omelette<strong> <\/strong>or fruit and yogurt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><strong>Lunch:<\/strong> Chicken and quinoa salad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><strong>Dinner:<\/strong> Slimming World sticky chicken with lots of vegetables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><strong>Snacks:<\/strong> Corn cakes, Hi-fi bar, fish sticks, boiled eggs, lean ham, a few Babybel Light cheeses.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.slimmingworld.co.uk\/blog\/inspire-8st-weight-loss-for-type-2-diabetes\/\"><strong>MORE ON THE BLOG: Read how John Dick lost 8st to reverse his type 2 diabetes symptoms \u2013 plus 5 ways to help reduce your diabetes risk<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>As Helen\u2019s story shows, making healthy lifestyle changes can improve control of type 2 diabetes.
