Slimming World announces new charity partner for 2022!

The UK and Ireland’s leading weight management provider, Slimming World, has announced it will be supporting Alzheimer’s Research UK through its UK book sales and group donations.

Through its own charitable foundation SMILES, Slimming World will continue to support Cancer Research UK and the Irish Cancer Society through fundraising campaigns, as well as increase awareness and raise money for Alzheimer’s Research UK through sales of Slimming World books in its community groups, and donations from its members.

We are delighted to announce that we will be supporting Alzheimer’s Research UK throughout 2022, as it’s a charity close to so many of our Consultants’ and members’ hearts.

“We supported our previous charity partner, Great Ormond Street Children’s hospital (GOSH), for five years, raising an amazing £750,000 for the charity. We want to thank GOSH for working with us, as well as our colleagues and members for helping to raise funds to support the charity.

“We hope to be equally successful in raising funds for the fantastic work undertaken by Alzheimer’s Research UK.”

Dementia is now one of the leading causes of death in the UK. As the country’s leading dementia research charity, Alzheimer’s Research UK’s vision is of a world where people are free from the fear, harm and heartbreak of dementia. The charity aims to bring about the first life-changing dementia treatments.

Lucy Squance, Director of Supporter-Led Fundraising at Alzheimer’s Research UK, commented: “We’re delighted to be embarking on this exciting partnership and incredibly grateful to Slimming World for supporting life-changing dementia research. Unless we act, one in three people born today will develop dementia during their lifetime – but with Slimming World colleagues and members by our side, we can change this. Through research, we will keep people connected to their families, their worlds and themselves for longer. We rely on the generosity of our amazing supporters to carry out our work, and Slimming World’s backing will be vital in making breakthroughs possible.”

About Slimming World

Slimming World was founded by Margaret Miles-Bramwell OBE in Derbyshire in 1969 and has become the UK and Ireland’s leading weight loss organisation with more people choosing to attend a Slimming World group each week than any other weight loss programme. We support hundreds of thousands of people, both in our groups and online, to lose weight and to adopt new habits to stay slim for life.

Over the years our founding principles haven’t changed:

Our unique programme is based on a powerfully motivating support system called IMAGE (Individual Motivation and Group Experience) Therapy. Underpinned by a deep understanding of the psychology of overweight people, and incorporating the most effective sustainable behaviour change techniques, IMAGE Therapy is designed to inspire and motivate slimmers to make positive changes and to develop new, healthier habits around food and activity.

Food Optimising is our healthy eating plan, based on the liberating concept of Free Food. We encourage our members to fill up on those foods that are naturally lower in energy density (calories per gram) and also highly satisfying while limiting foods that are highest in fat and sugar and are less satisfying, so they lose weight without ever feeling hungry or deprived and without having to weigh, measure or count everything they eat.

Our activity programme, Body Magic helps members to overcome any barriers around activity. Members choose when to start and they set the pace, finding activities they genuinely enjoy, until regular physical activity becomes an intrinsic part of their daily routine.

At the heart of everything we do lies our passion for treating every member with genuine care, empathy and respect.

We’re proud to work with the NHS, the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities (OHID), The Royal College of Midwives and others to help shape the future of weight management in the UK and Ireland.
