Slimming World staff turn it up a gear for Cycle to Work Day

Employees at Slimming World Head Office have switched up their daily commute by swapping their four wheels for two as part of the UK’s biggest cycle commuting event – ‘Cycle to Work Day’.

The annual event encourages workers to reduce their carbon footprint and improve their health and wellbeing by building more activity into their daily routines. This is the 12th year that Slimming World has taken part in the scheme inspired by the great health benefits that cycling can do for its employees’ physical and mental wellbeing.

After their morning ride, the cyclists enjoyed a complimentary breakfast in the staff restaurant at the organisation’s head office based in Alfreton, Derbyshire.

Slimming World’s Senior HR Business Partner Bridget Shirtcliffe, who manages the company’s ‘Cycle2Work’ scheme, says: “It was fabulous to see our staff get involved for Cycle-to-Work Day again. At Slimming World, we’re always invested in supporting our teams toward a healthy lifestyle and to improve their wellbeing – just as we do with our members within our community groups across the UK and Ireland.

“And with everyone keen to save on travel costs at the moment, supporting initiatives such as Cycle-to-Work Day is an amazing opportunity to encourage our people to become more active, support a greener environment, and save money. It’s a win-win!

“National Cycle To Work Day has come at a perfect time as we’ve recently re-launched our organisation’s Cycle to Work Scheme – after a year out due to the pandemic. It’s a fantastic scheme that offers our employees the opportunity to purchase a bike and safety equipment at discounted prices – with monthly repayments through their salary. As part of our healthy perks and benefits we offer team members complimentary fruit, as well as freshly prepared nutritious breakfasts and lunches at discounted prices, including vegan and vegetarian choices. We’ve also recently purchased a set of spinning bikes for our free on-site gym, plus a variety of exciting new activity classes to inspire our teams to become more active. Staff can also take advantage of discounted health and beauty treatments at Hair and Beauty at Slimming World, which is located on our site.”

About Slimming World

Slimming World was founded by Margaret Miles-Bramwell OBE in Derbyshire in 1969 and has become the UK and Ireland’s leading weight loss organisation with more people choosing to attend a Slimming World group each week than any other weight loss programme. We support hundreds of thousands of people, both in our groups and online, to lose weight and to adopt new habits to stay slim for life.

Over the years our founding principles haven’t changed:

· Our unique programme is based on a powerfully motivating support system called IMAGE (Individual Motivation and Group Experience) Therapy. Underpinned by a deep understanding of the psychology of overweight people, and incorporating the most effective sustainable behaviour change techniques, IMAGE Therapy is designed to inspire and motivate slimmers to make positive changes and to develop new, healthier habits around food and activity.

· Food Optimising is our healthy eating plan, based on the liberating concept of Free Food. We encourage our members to fill up on those foods that are naturally lower in energy density (calories per gram) and also highly satisfying while limiting foods that are highest in fat and sugar and are less satisfying, so they lose weight without ever feeling hungry or deprived and without having to weigh, measure or count everything they eat.

· Our activity programme, Body Magic helps members to overcome any barriers around activity. Members choose when to start and they set the pace, finding activities they genuinely enjoy, until regular physical activity becomes an intrinsic part of their daily routine.

At the heart of everything we do lies our passion for treating every member with genuine care, empathy and respect.

We’re proud to work with the NHS, the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities (OHID), The Royal College of Midwives and others to help shape the future of weight management in the UK and Ireland.
