Slimming World's Lockdown Commitment

Summary

Slimming World will continue to support its members to achieve their weight loss goals through inspiring, motivating weekly groups, despite a new four-week lockdown in England and the temporary restrictions in place around the UK and Ireland.

From Thursday 5th November, Slimming World groups in England will run virtually, so that where they’re unable to meet in person at their usual venues during the lockdown, members will instead be able log on to an online weekly Zoom group session.

“Even though England is in lockdown once again, we are totally committed to supporting our members with their weight loss – no matter what. Given that being overweight is associated with a significant number of life-threatening illnesses, and of course it also brings a higher risk of severe illness from COVID-19, it’s never been more important for us to be there for our members, helping them reach their weight loss goals,” says Slimming World joint managing director Lisa Salmon.

We’re more determined than ever to ensure that we don’t give up on members and that members don’t put their weight loss on hold.

“Our Consultants are dedicated to helping their members to lose weight and live healthier, more active lives. In August, after the first lockdown, we relaunched our real-life groups with changes in place to keep everyone safe and reassured in line with Covid guidance, and it was inspiring to see the enthusiasm with which slimmers got back on track with their weight losses. So, although we’re now temporarily suspending our real-life groups again in many parts of the UK and Ireland, we’re more determined than ever to ensure that we don’t give up on members and that members don’t put their weight loss on hold.

“Members have a number of different options to choose from – whether it’s real-life groups wherever we can safely open; Venue + Virtual, a temporary next-best option where members can weigh in person and take part in an online support group; virtual groups or online membership. Whichever choice they make, they’ll find the same friendship, care, inspiration and motivation we all so desperately need – more now than ever. We’re determined to keep our promise made by every Consultant to every member, to ensure that they achieve their dreams,” adds Lisa.

All Slimming World members will also continue to get access to over 50 years of experience, expertise and science and Slimming World’s famous Food Optimising eating plan, 24/7 access to our exclusive members-only website with more than 1,400 recipes, meal plans, weight loss strategies and articles, and our members-only app, including the brand-new barcode scanner.

Notes to Editors

Slimming World was founded by Margaret Miles-Bramwell (OBE, FRSA) in 1969. Members join local weekly groups or an online programme. Groups are run by a network of community-based Slimming World Consultants across the UK and Republic of Ireland. Consultants are trained in the role of diet and physical activity in weight management, as well as recognised behaviour-change techniques. Slimming World’s healthy eating plan, Food Optimising, is based on the science of energy density and satiety. Our phased activity programme, Body Magic, eases members into activity until it becomes an intrinsic part of their daily routine. Slimming World’s programme integrates practical, up-to-date advice with a highly-developed support system based on care and compassion, and Consultant training focuses on facilitating, encouraging and empowering members to make changes in a supportive, warm and friendly group environment. Consultant training is delivered through the Slimming World Academy. Slimming World also invests in a comprehensive research programme to develop its support for long-term weight management. The group support provided by Slimming World is recognised as effective by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and the NHS.
