Today the meals, meat products, sides, lunch bowls and sauces sell in Iceland and The Food Warehouse, with filled pasta, naan breads and pancakes all added to the range for the first time earlier this month. Lots of the products are also available in Dunnes Stores in Ireland, too.

In an unprecedented move, thousands of Slimming World Consultants will visit stores across a single coordinated week from 10th to 18th January – marking the first time the organisation has mobilised its local support network at this scale to engage directly with shoppers in‑store.

The innovative campaign aims to bring Slimming World’s supportive, community‑led weight‑loss experience to life, giving customers the chance to meet Consultants, discover how Slimming World’s groups work and explore the Free Food range – developed to make healthier eating accessible, satisfying and convenient.

The products are perfect for people following Slimming World’s healthy eating plan or anyone who wants to eat more healthily and is short on time, and they’ve become a firm favourite among members and shoppers alike. This January the packaging has had a makeover, making it even easier for consumers to see the high nutritional value of the range, including highlighting protein and fibre content as well as how many plant varieties each meal or product contains.

Throughout the week, Consultants will be on hand in stores to:

Offer practical advice and guidance on getting started with healthy eating

Share information about local Slimming World groups and weekly support

Introduce shoppers to the Free Food range and highlight how it supports real-life weightloss success.

Slimming World’s Director of Food Allison Brentnall says: “This is the first time we’ve brought together our Consultants across the UK and Ireland in such a coordinated way, and it marks an exciting moment in our partnership with Iceland, The Food Warehouse and Dunnes Stores. Our Free Food range is designed to make healthy, satisfying meals simple and accessible for everyone, and having our Consultants in store means shoppers can discover not only the products themselves but also the powerful support that Slimming World groups offer every week.

“It’s a truly innovative activation that brings our brand, our values and our community spirit directly to customers at a time of year when we know lots of people will be thinking about making changes, whether that be eating more healthily or losing weight.”

<pp:quotes><pp:quote>

Free Foods are those foods that are lower in calories for their weight (lower energy dense foods) so they help to fill you up and keep you satisfied for longer. These include everyday favourites, like pasta, potatoes, fruit, lean meat and veggies. All products within Slimming World’s exclusive food range at Iceland are made with Free Food, and slimmers can be guaranteed top quality flavours and ingredients while still achieving successful weight losses.

Nutrition, Research and Health Policy Manager at Slimming World Carolyn Pallister says: “Free Food is the superhero at the heart of our eating plan, giving members the freedom to live the life they want, eat the food they love and still lose weight. The competition is a fun way to harness this and help our members to discover some delicious new recipe ideas along the way.

“With so many Free Foods there’s no limit to the dishes members can create with them and every week in our groups we see such creativity from members as they share food ideas and swap recipes – they’re so inventive and have real fun and enjoyment with food, which isn’t always what people expect when they’re losing weight! Slimming World groups are great hubs of support and inspiration, and Free Food Festival and the competition are extensions of that. So we’re really excited to see what tasty and original recipes they come up with this year – and for the winning meal to hit the freezer aisles in Iceland later this year.”

Entrants will be making and sharing their recipe creations in cook-off events held in their weekly Slimming World group. Slimming World is based on a deep understanding of the psychology of slimming. It’s been helping members form new healthy habits to help them lose weight and stay slim for life for more than 50 years, through a powerful combination of group support, a generous flexible eating plan and an incremental activity programme.

Our unique programme is based on a powerfully motivating support system called IMAGE (Individual Motivation and Group Experience) Therapy. Underpinned by a deep understanding of the psychology of overweight people, and incorporating the most effective sustainable behaviour change techniques, IMAGE Therapy is designed to inspire and motivate slimmers to make positive changes and to develop new, healthier habits around food and activity.

We’re proud to work with the NHS, Public Health England, The Royal College of Midwives and others to help shape the future of weight management in the UK.

</pp:boilerplate>

Step into summer

Deciding that we want to make some changes to help us feel happier and healthier is a fantastic first step. It’s the next part – sticking to those changes – that can be the bigger challenge however little changes can quickly add up to a healthier lifestyle. Dr Jacquie says, “Taking small steps and having something to aim for can bring you tangible results – and seeing those results makes sticking with it easier. Adding an extra portion of vegetables to your evening meals every day makes them healthier without too much fuss. And, if you want to be more active, starting to build up gradually and making small changes helps to give a sense of achievement and reinforces your promises to yourself. Sharing your plans with fellow members at group also helps with commitment and motivation.”

Get that sunshine feeling

Being on the same journey as others can be incredibly uplifting and encouraging and as we know now more than ever, being together, in person, can be joyous. Slimming World groups are the ideal place to find those like-minded people who can help to inspire, support and motivate you. You may find other people wishing to lose weight have experienced similar ups and downs to you. Sharing these experiences will help to bond you together and give you the inspiration and motivation you need to make those lifestyle changes. Dr Jacquie says, “Our members tell us the hour they spend each week with their friends at group is an opportunity to make reflections on the week and it helps them to feel geared up for success. As well as the inspiration and tips they get from their friends in group, the motivation and support they receive can help members to understand themselves as a slimmer too.”

Love your summer routine

“Doing something regularly is key to helping new habits stick,” says Dr Jacquie. “Fitting something into your routine this summer and doing it frequently will make it feel natural going forward. Adding a weekly batch-cooking session or workout in your diary could be a good idea too, as making an appointment with yourself can make it more likely to happen. Talking to your fellow slimmers about your plans also helps to reinforce them. Having a regular routine is especially important during these unpredictable times, when healthy habits can help us feel more grounded.”

Plan for challenges and avoid summertime sadness

When you’re trying to make a lasting lifestyle change, it’s normal to hit obstacles along the way. Accepting this and being prepared for it will help you to move past any bumps. Being kind to ourselves, at all stages of our weight-loss journeys, is key to success. If you feel like anxiety around change is holding you back, looking at your core reasons could help. In Slimming World groups, members are encouraged to think about and share those deeper reasons and often find it helpful to talk through scenarios for possible solutions to try – which can boost motivation when it’s most needed.

Enjoy walking on sunshine

Summer’s here and the time is right to be more active. To help make any new behaviour something that you do frequently, it needs to be something that fits in with your lifestyle and matches your personal likes and dislikes. Dr Jacquie explains, “If you want to be more active but hate running, there’s no point saying that you’ll go for a daily jog. Aiming to do an activity you enjoy, like a gentle walk on a summer’s day can be incredibly uplifting and it’s much more likely to become a lasting habit.” Jacquie adds, “Forming habits which are meaningful and part of your daily life means you’re more likely to stick to it too, for example walking part of your commute to work or getting your kids out of the house for an hour a day to enjoy a game of frisbee, a kick about in the park or a treasure hunt through the woods.”

<pp:quotes><pp:quote>

Looking back to when I was younger, I always felt bigger than other children and I was always conscience of my weight. I started to put weight on when I was 10 years old and hurt my knee. I had to use crutches and with reduced mobility and boredom, I piled on the pounds. As I recovered and got older, I developed a bad habit of grazing and waiting for the next thing to eat. The bigger I got the less I wanted to go out with my friends so I would stay home and spend that time eating. It was a vicious circle.

“I’d tried so many different ways to lose weight. I’d tried cutting out carbs and I used 16 different calorie counting apps, but they never worked.
A survey about calorie counting as a weight loss method commissioned by Slimming World, which polled over 2,000 UK adults and over 2,500 Slimming World members*, has shown that calorie counting alone is not an easy, balanced or sustainable way to lose weight

Almost three quarters of adults (72%) surveyed said they feel that counting calories takes away the freedom from enjoying food

We support hundreds of thousands of people, both in our groups and online, to lose weight and to adopt new habits to stay slim for life.

Over the years our founding principles haven’t changed:

Our unique programme is based on a powerfully motivating support system called IMAGE (Individual Motivation and Group Experience) Therapy. Underpinned by a deep understanding of the psychology of overweight people, and incorporating the most effective sustainable behaviour change techniques, IMAGE Therapy is designed to inspire and motivate slimmers to make positive changes and to develop new, healthier habits around food and activity.

Food Optimising is our healthy eating plan, based on the liberating concept of Free Food. We encourage our members to fill up on those foods that are naturally lower in energy density (calories per gram) and also highly satisfying while limiting foods that are highest in fat and sugar and are less satisfying, so they lose weight without ever feeling hungry or deprived and without having to weigh, measure or count everything they eat.

Our activity programme, Body Magic, encourages members to become more active, more often in ways that they enjoy, until regular physical activity becomes an intrinsic part of daily routine.

Above all, at the heart of everything we do, lies our passion for treating every member with genuine care, empathy and respect.

That study showed that people who followed a diet of low energy density food were more likely to feel full than those who tried a restrictive approach by counting calories and eating smaller portions.

Professor of Appetite and Energy Balance James Stubbs from the University of Leeds says, “Losing weight isn’t easy. Self-management and self-monitoring are important for weight management. Excessive and exclusive focus on counting calories, can take a huge amount of effort and resource and can be a distraction from the package of evidence-based behaviour change approaches that are most likely to lead to more successful weight loss. A lot of people give up on diets because they feel hungry or deprived. Eating low energy density foods can help overcome that problem. Gram for gram, low energy dense foods contain fewer calories than high energy density foods, so people are able to eat a larger volume of food for the same (or lower) calorie intake, leading them to feel fuller. The best evidence for effective, sustainable, weight loss is to use techniques to self-manage food intake, physical activity and lapses in weight that we all experience during a weight loss journey - to use evidence-based behaviour change approaches that are more likely to help us change our habits around food.”

Raising awareness of the number of calories food and drink products contain including placing calorie counts on menus in restaurants, may make it easier to keep track of calorie consumption, however it’s clear from this survey that the majority of people struggle to sustain calorie counting over the long term.

Carolyn Pallister, Slimming World’s Nutrition and Health Policy Manager says: “To achieve weight loss, we do have to eat or drink fewer calories than our bodies use, but that doesn’t mean we have to obsessively measure, weigh and count every calorie that passes our lips – there is an easier way.

“While counting calories can work for some people and may work in the short term, the survey highlights how for many slimmers it can quickly become tedious, boring and limiting and leave you feeling hungry. From a health perspective and to aid weight-loss, it’s important to think about the foods you eat and not only the number of calories in them. Choosing less energy-dense, more satiating foods which are high in protein and fibre will help to keep you fuller for longer.

“A key part of long-term successful weight management is behaviour change support. Members of our community-based groups learn to plan and base meals on foods which are naturally low in calories and that will fill them up and keep them satisfied for longer. These are foods like lean meat, fish and poultry, beans, pulses, fruits, vegetables and high fibre starchy carbs. Slimming World calls these foods ‘Free Food’ because members enjoy them without restriction, and without the need to weigh, measure or count which, as our survey shows, can be both unsustainable and unenjoyable especially in the long term. These foods are the basis of a healthy diet so members learn to base meals and long-term eating habits on them and eat them without having to measure every mouthful.”

In January 2019, weighing over 17st, Caitlin Trick walked through the doors of her local Slimming World group, not realising the impact it would have on the rest of her life.

“I feel like I’ve been overweight my entire life. Members join local weekly groups or an online programme. Groups are run by a network of community-based Slimming World Consultants across the UK and Republic of Ireland. Consultants are trained in the role of diet and physical activity in weight management, as well as recognised behaviour-change techniques. Slimming World’s healthy eating plan, Food Optimising, is based on the science of energy density and satiety. Our phased activity programme, Body Magic, eases members into activity until it becomes an intrinsic part of their daily routine. I had to sit down while I answered it, I was so exhausted. The walk has been less than 10 minutes, but I was completely breathless, and my back was aching. It was my daughter-in-law calling to ask me if I would go with her to her local Slimming World group as she didn’t want to go alone. I was happy to go to support her and we joined together that night.

I didn’t think too much about it as I’d joined other weight-loss groups before myself and although I saw some success, as soon as I stopped going, I went back to eating the same things I did before and the weight piled back on.

Back then, I felt so unwell because of my weight. I had type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, severe back pain and collapsed ankles as the extra weight I was carrying had weakened the tendons and ligaments in my feet which meant it was extremely painful to walk or even stand. I was taking three tablets a day for my diabetes and I just had no energy. I’d struggled with my weight my entire adult life and at 17st 13lbs, I knew I needed to do something about it.

On my first night attending the group, I was apprehensive, and I almost gave up the following week as I only lost half a pound. Then I decided I wouldn’t be beaten, I started cooking from scratch inspired by all the ideas shared in group and I soon started seeing results. I loved getting the awards each time I lost a little bit more weight.

My Consultant and the other members of the group keep me motivated and are always there for me, even if it’s not been a good week. I feel like part of a family as my group have supported me from day one and I know they will always be there for me to help maintain my weight each week. When this second lockdown is over, I can’t wait for the real-life groups to start again so I can see everyone in person.

Before joining Slimming World, I wouldn’t plan my meals at all and, now, I always make sure I plan ahead and have lots of fruit and veg in the fridge. I’ve stopped eating sweets and cakes and removed all fat from my cooking. I never feel hungry and I love making a Slimming World Sunday roast – it’s so easy!

In just over 14 months I lost 8 stone and my health has improved dramatically – my diabetes is in remission and I don’t take any medication at all for it now. My blood pressure is normal, my cholesterol is no longer high, and I don’t suffer from the back pain I had before either. I have so much more energy, I’ve taken up park runs and before lockdown I danced and attended regular exercise classes. I even insisted on doing my usual weekly 5k run the morning of my daughter’s wedding! Throughout the first lockdown, I was so active I ran at least 5k every day, sometimes 10k and on one occasion a half marathon distance. I’m planning to continue this over the next four weeks. Anything is possible if you really want to do it.

I know I’ve inspired lots of people to join Slimming World as I’m always getting asked for advice since I lost weight and seeing those people lose weight too has been incredible. When I saw my diabetes nurse, she looked at my chart, then looked at me and said, “You’ve lost 8 stone!!” and started dancing around the room. In the last few days, I got the results of my long-term blood sugars test and it’s been the same now for 6 months. If it stays the same for the next 6 months, I will have a diagnosis of complete remission meaning I’ll no longer have diabetes. I’ll have got rid of it! The nurse who gave me the results was keen to make sure I didn’t underestimate what I've achieved and it’s made me realise how well I’ve done and to make sure I keep the weight off.

I feel like a different person, losing weight has changed my life. Shopping for clothes is so easy now - I’ve gone from a size 26 to a size 12 and I love it. I never had any confidence before to talk to people and I would be the one sat quietly in the corner. I’ve been single since 1997, 23 years (!) and now I’m in a relationship with someone, which I never thought would happen. It’s clear to me losing weight gave me the confidence I needed. My family have seen me blossom and they are so proud of me. I can’t believe the difference physically and I never realised my personality would change too, I feel healthy and vibrant and I’ve finally found my zest for life!”

BEFORE

Breakfast: several slices of toast with butter and jam

Lunch: cup of soup and large roll covered in lashings of butter

Dinner: anything with chips, for example pizza, fish and chips or spaghetti bolognaise covered in cheese

Snacks: crisps or cakes especially cream cakes, biscuits, sweets and chocolates.

Supper: hot chocolate and cake

AFTER

Breakfast: porridge with berries or 2 Weetabix with berries and fat free natural yoghurt

Snacks: coffee, banana and grapes or apples

Lunch: pasta with tomato sauce and a variety of vegetables. </pp:boilerplate>

Stroke is the leading cause of disability worldwide with almost two thirds of stroke survivors leaving hospital with a disability. A stroke can happen to anyone, at anytime, anywhere. It’s the fourth single-largest cause of death in the UK and one in four adults will have a stroke in their lifetime. However, almost all strokes could be prevented by addressing a small number of key risk factors.

To mark World Stroke Day (October 29th) raising awareness of the risks of stroke, Slimming World’s Nutrition and Health Policy Manager, Carolyn Pallister shares nine golden rules to help reduce your risk.

“Every five minutes stroke destroys lives. In the UK, there are more than 100,000 incidents of stroke each year – that is around one stroke every five minutes. Many stroke survivors, of which there are 1.2 million in the UK, face significant challenges that include physical disability, communication difficulties, changes in how they think and feel, loss of work, income and social networks. Being overweight is one of the top ten risk factors for stroke and is associated with almost 1 in 5 strokes. This is because carrying excess weight increases your risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, high cholesterol and type 2 diabetes which all contribute to higher stroke risk.

“Maintaining a healthy weight and managing things like diet and smoking can help with other risk factors, such as high blood pressure and diabetes, and in turn reduce stroke risk.”

Aim for a varied, balanced diet. This means limiting fat (especially saturated fat which is found in butter, cakes, pastry, fatty strips of meat) and added sugar intake; enjoying a variety of fruits and vegetables (at least 5-a-day); and including some wholegrains (such as brown rice and wholewheat pasta).

Be mindful of your salt intake. Too much can raise your blood pressure which is a risk factor for stroke. Making homemade sauces and meals can help cut your salt intake as there’s often a lot of hidden salt in ready-made sauces and ready meals. Try to limit having too much bread, cheese, smoked fish and meat, pickles and condiments and enjoy them in moderation.

Be active where you can. Make the most of the great outdoors, your local parks, fields, leisure facilities, and at home exercises (housework counts!). Physical activity helps keep the heart healthy, which in turn can help protect against a stroke.

Think about what you drink. It’s better for our health to enjoy alcohol in moderation. To help keep stroke risk down aim to drink no more than six pints of beer/cider each week, or six 175ml glasses of wine. This is equivalent to 14 units which is the maximum recommended weekly intake for UK adults.

Stop smoking. Cutting down, quitting or not being a smoker at all can help reduce stroke risk.

Aim for or maintain a healthy weight. This is one of the best things you can do to reduce the risk of having a stroke. Being of a healthy weight typically means your cardiovascular system (the heart and blood vessels) is healthier and is under less stress.

Opt for lean cuts of meat. When it comes to enjoying your meat and two veg, opting for lean cuts of meat, such as 5% fat mince, trimming the fat off bacon and other fatty cuts of meat, and taking off any skin on poultry. This all helps in reducing saturated fat intake, which is one step closer to a healthy, balanced diet.

Aim for two portions of fish each week. White fish such as hake, cod or haddock are a really lean source of protein while oily fish like sardines, mackerel and salmon not only provide protein but are amazing for omega-3 fatty acids which are said to help prevent the blood from clotting and protect our arteries. Aiming for two portions (one white, one oily) each week is one of many great ways to help towards having a healthy heart.

Enjoy fibre rich foods. This fabulous nutrient is found in all fruit, veg and starchy carbohydrates such as potatoes, rice, pasta and not only keeps things moving in our digestive system but some fibre-filled foods can help towards keeping our cholesterol levels nice and healthy, these include oats, beans, peas and lentils.

ICU healthcare assistant loses 14st after mini-stroke scare. It was the wake-up call I needed

John Schofield, 49

Weight loss: 14st

Eccles, Manchester

“Exactly five years ago, in 2015 I was working at Wythenshawe Hospital in the cardiology ward when I suddenly felt unwell and colleagues noticed I was slurring my words. I remember feeling disorientated and not registering what was being said around me. As I was at the hospital already, a specialist nurse took my blood pressure and did a quick ECG. The results showed I had atrial fibrillation, something I hadn’t been familiar with before then which meant my heart was racing and beating faster than it should have done. I was referred to a cardiology team and for the next twelve months I got more and more out of breath doing the simplest tasks, my skin was clammy and I was still slurring my words.

Eventually, I had a pacemaker fitted to slow my heart rate down but this didn’t stop me having another incident at work when I felt disorientated, my blood pressure dropped and I was rushed to A&E. After conducting a CT scan of my head, the radiographer asked me when I’d had a stroke and I remember feeling so shocked as I wasn’t aware I’d even had one. I realise now the first time I felt unwell and started slurring my words, I experienced a mini stroke – something I thought then only happened to older people. It was the wake-up call I needed to make a change. I knew carrying excess weight was putting more strain on my heart and that the pacemaker I’d had fitted wasn’t cheap. I felt if someone had put that much time, effort and expense into making sure I lived, it was time I did my bit to help.

At this point I was taking ten tablets a day, four in the morning and six at night. I have always suffered from asthma and I couldn’t go anywhere without my inhaler. My chest always felt heavy and my legs and joints ached all the time. I wasn’t very active at all and even a short walk to the shop would take me forever and a day.

Around that time, I bumped into two school friends in the local supermarket who had both lost weight and looking so much healthier I had to ask how they’d done it. They said they’d been going to their local Slimming World group. I’d tried so many weight-loss plans and slimming groups but I hadn’t tried this one so I thought I’ll give it a go. I didn’t hold out much hope but weighing 26 stone I was at a loss to know what else I could do.

The results were amazing. Everyone in the group was so friendly and we had such a laugh, sharing tips and ideas and supporting each other. Within two weeks I’d lost 15lbs and not only that, I was starting to feel better too. I had more energy and was less breathless.By the end of last year, just two years after joining Slimming World, I’d completely turned my life around. I’d lost over half my body weight, 14 stone, gone from a 60-inch waist to a 32-inch waist and was feeling so much better. I don’t take any medication and I no longer need an inhaler. I don’t have any aches and pains in my legs, and I’ve got a brand-new wardrobe too after going from size 5XL to medium or small sizes. I can buy clothes so much more easily, not just from specialist shops or online.

A typical week prior to joining Slimming World would see me satisfy my savoury tooth with pies, pasties, sausage rolls and burgers, skipping breakfast and eating pork pies or scones as snacks in between meals. Now I eat a lot of fruit and I make sure I eat three meals a day. I’ve given up beer which I used to drink every night and I always make sure I have eggs for breakfast as that keeps me going until lunchtime. I still enjoy savoury foods like burgers, but I make them myself with lean mince and I’ve found a new love for cooking. I prep my meals most mornings before work, dicing and cutting veg for that evening’s meal and I’m a big fan of the slow cooker. I’m really proud of my meatball chilli. I used to drive past joggers and say to my kids that will be me one day! Now I walk everywhere rather than get in the car and I regularly walk around 4.5 miles to my dad’s house which takes me just under an hour. I recently ran a 10K raising £700 for the Ticker Club, a local heart charity. The old me would never have believed I could have done that.

Since February this year I’ve been working in the ICU department of the Salford Royal, on the critical care ward as a healthcare assistant. Most recently I’ve been working on the Covid infection control ward. Being on my feet for 13 hour shifts and wearing the PPE, which is like something out of Star Wars, has been a real challenge. During the height of lockdown, I struggled to stay on plan as the panic buying meant empty shelves and my usual ingredients were nowhere to be found. Sheer exhaustion saw me forego my good intentions and I soon put on weight again. My mood was low and working shifts I found it hard to join my group at one of the weekly virtual classes they set up. It was all too easy to think if I wasn’t going to get weighed, and without the support of my group, it didn’t matter if I slipped a little, but I soon realised it did! I lost my way during lockdown but now I can meet my group again in person they help me feel motivated if I have a bad week. I feel back in control and I’m determined to get back on track by Christmas. I’ve seen first-hand the impact of coronavirus and hearing about the increased risks of being overweight if you contract Covid has made me so relieved I was in good shape this year and also more determined to stay that way. I know what I need to do, and I don’t want to throw it all away.”

<pp:quotes><pp:quote>

To mark the launch of ‘Free Food February’, Slimming World, based in Alfreton, served up a mouth-watering healthy feast for all of its head office employees – which was ‘Free’ in more ways than one.

Throughout February, Slimming World groups across the UK and Ireland are celebrating Free Food February, a festival-inspired celebration named after all of the ‘Free Food’ that the organisation’s 900,000 members can enjoy freely on the Food Optimising healthy eating plan.

Slimming World’s eating plan uses the principles of energy density (the calories per gram in a food), and satiety (how filling a food is). Foods with low energy density, are best at satisfying your appetite and can be enjoyed freely without weighing, counting or measuring, so members learn how to make healthy choices and lose weight – and keep it off – without feeling hungry.

Free Food includes lean meat and fish, plain tofu, pasta, rice, potatoes, eggs and more.

To celebrate the national launch, and as a special treat, delicious Free Food-filled dishes were served up on the house to head office staff, in the brand-new restaurant at the organisation’s new state-of-the-art extension.

The catering team cooked up a variety of healthy meals to choose from including sloppy Joe, Goan masala tortilla, pasta penne, bacon wrapped chicken with roasted root vegetables, jumbo scotch eggs and a spicy lentil and chick pea stew. All meals came with rice, Slimming World diced roast new potatoes or jacket potatoes, hot vegetables and salad options.

Victor Ohene, Digital Producer (pictured above), says: “I had the bacon wrapped chicken with the jumbo scotch egg and roast potatoes and it was absolutely delicious! We are really well looked after here at head office and our lovely catering team work incredibly hard to provide us with a variety of healthy and filling meals to choose from every day. The meals are always made from Slimming World recipes which is especially great when a new recipe book comes out as we get to test some tasty dishes! This time they were from our new Free Food on the Go recipe book and they were delicious!”

Each year, the Slimming World restaurant serves up more than 100,000 subsidised meals for staff, visitors and the 5,500 Consultants who attend the Slimming World Academy for training. All meals are cooked from scratch by a talented in-house catering team.

PIC CAPTION: Owen Hudson and Victor Ohene enjoy a ‘Free Food’ feast at their Alfreton-based head office

<pp:quotes><pp:quote>

New research by YouGov, commissioned by Slimming World, reveals widespread confusion about the role of carbohydrates in health and weight loss, as a result of anti-carb messages and myths

More than 70%[i] of people surveyed by YouGov have tried to lose weight, with more than a third (37%) of them following low-carbohydrate diets popularised by celebrities such as Kim Kardashian

Low-carbohydrate diets are difficult to follow, with dieters reporting feeling hungry, bored and restricted in what they could eat

81% of respondents thought it a myth or were uncertain whether it was a myth or fact that carbohydrates should be the main source of calories in a healthy, balanced diet

New year’s resolutions to lose weight via restrictive low-carb diets are likely to fail because these diets are unsustainable.

New research by YouGov has found more than a third (37%) of people who have tried to lose weight have attempted to follow low-carbohydrate diets, popularised by celebrities such as Gwyneth Paltrow and Kim Kardashian.

The Big Carb Survey also reveals that low-carbohydrate plans, which see dieters cutting out starchy carbohydrates like potatoes, pasta, rice and bread, are difficult to follow. Respondents who have found these diets difficult to follow put it down to enjoying carbohydrates too much (52%), often feeling hungry (46%), feeling limited in what they could eat (40%), and finding the diet boring (30%).

In addition to these challenges of hunger and boredom, robust scientific evidence from the World Health Organisation, as well as UK and USA government guidance, shows that carbohydrates should be part of a healthy balanced diet within a weight-loss plan. Yet contrary to the scientific advice and despite the difficulty of sustaining a low-carb diet, two thirds (66%) of the 2,103 survey respondents have heard that low-carbohydrate diets are better for weight loss, and just over one third (35%) have heard that it was impossible to lose weight without cutting carbohydrates.

When asked if starchy carbohydrates should be the main source of calories in a healthy, balanced diet, in line with current government guidance, 81% thought this was a myth or weren’t certain whether it was a myth or fact. Only 19% understood it to be a fact. Furthermore, almost half (46%) of those surveyed reported to have heard that ‘Fruit is full of sugar so should be avoided’, nearly one in three (30%) reported having heard that ‘All carbohydrates are bad’ and almost one in three (31%) reported hearing that ‘Carbohydrates aren’t essential for a healthy balanced diet’.

Slimming World, which commissioned the YouGov research, says the study proves that people are bewildered about the role of carbohydrates in weight control due to conflicting and controversial messages coming from sources including the media (54%), the diet industry (30%) and social media (26%). The UK’s leading commercial weight-loss authority says the nation is confused about the role of carbohydrates in health and weight control and this confusion is hindering successful weight management and damaging the nation’s health.

Dr Jacquie Lavin, Head of Nutrition and Research at Slimming World, says: “There is a deep-seated misconception that people should avoid carbohydrates when they’re trying to lose weight, and as a nation we’re bombarded with anti-carbohydrate messages.

“Yet the truth is, carbohydrates play an important role both in a healthy diet and in sustainable weight loss – and the current carb confusion is fuelling the UK’s obesity problem. A diet to aid weight loss needs to be healthy and balanced*. It should give people the freedom and flexibility to enjoy a healthy balance of protein, carbohydrates and fat, and importantly it needs to be sustainable for the long term – without deprivation or cutting out whole food groups. As our research shows, low-carb diets are hard to follow. So if you want to lose weight this new year, and keep it off, avoid low-carb diets.”

Being hungry, which the Big Carb Survey found almost half of those (46%) who tried a low-carbohydrate diet often experienced, typically leaves people feeling unable to sustain weight-loss attempts.

There is a growing evidence base which proves that foods higher in protein and carbohydrates are far more satiating than foods high in fat[ii]. Eating filling, lower energy dense foods (those foods which have fewer calories per gram), which include carbohydrates such as pasta, rice and potatoes as well as fruit and vegetables, enables people to consume a larger volume of food and avoid hunger while reducing their overall calorie intake.

Dr Lavin continues: “For decades at Slimming World we’ve promoted the importance of filling up on low energy density foods – including starchy and fibre-rich carbohydrates such as pasta, potatoes and rice, plus plenty of fruit and veg – because you can eat large amounts of these foods for relatively few calories and feel fuller and more satisfied while losing weight.

“Obesity not only has an impact on our own personal health but puts a massive strain on our National Health Service, which has to deal with a number of obesity-related conditions. What people need is help and advice to lose weight and keep it off. Advising overweight people to follow low-carbohydrate diets, which we know are unsustainable and potentially cut out a group of foods that are essential for a healthy balanced diet, is irresponsible. It sets people up to fail and is likely to leave them struggling with feelings of guilt and low self-esteem as well as potentially regaining the weight they lost.

“To end this vicious cycle, it’s vitally important we stop demonising carbohydrates and provide people who’d like to lose weight with accurate information, alongside effective support for maintaining healthy, flexible and sustainable diets.”

For more information on how confusion about the role of carbohydrates in our diet is damaging the nation's health, please download Slimming World's Carbfusion report.

ENDS

*Slimming World members are encouraged to include one third of a plate of vegetables at mealtimes. Vegetables are really low in energy density (calories per gram) and are also great for satisfying your appetite. Including at least one third of a plate of vegetables at mealtimes (where it makes sense) and choosing them between meals will ensure that you lose weight well - and builds in the all important veg that you might not otherwise be eating.

[i] All figures, unless otherwise stated, are from YouGov Plc.
Packed full of more than 60 classic spicy (or not-so-spicy) curry dishes, Curry Club caters for all tastes – with Indian classics such as lamb bhuna, chicken tikka masala and Goan prawn curry, through to curries with a twist, like Japanese chicken katsu curry, Indonesian beef rendang and Thai green fish curry.

Oliver Maxey, Cookbook Editor at Slimming World, said: “Many people think trying to lose weight means giving up all of your favourite foods and being really restricted in what you can eat. That’s absolutely not the case with Slimming World though – making just a few healthy swaps means that you can enjoy delicious dishes like curries and still lose weight. Herbs and spices can be used freely on the plan without weighing, counting or measuring, which allows us to pack our recipes full of flavour without the need for oodles of cream or fat. Our members never have to feel hungry or deprived, or guilty about the food they’re eating. It’s healthy, fresh, delicious food that everyone can enjoy.”

As well as mouthwatering mains, Curry Club also caters for those who fancy a bit on the side, with recipes for complementary dishes like Classic pilau rice, Saag paneer, Bombay potatoes and Chana masala. And if you really want to roll out the red carpet and go for the full restaurant experience, you can rustle up sizzling starters like Carrot and onion bhajis, Beef satay skewers or Masala-grilled squid.

Every recipe in Curry Club is perfect for those following Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan, which allows slimmers to satisfy their appetite on everyday foods like fruit and veg, meat, chicken, fish, pasta, rice, potatoes and more, so there’s no need to go hungry while losing weight.

Oliver continues: “For the first time we’ve also printed a hashtag inside this book – #swcurryclub. Our online communities are full of pictures of delicious Slimming World meals and we know that thousands of members take inspiration from them. Hopefully with #swcurryclub we can gather all of these great images in one place to show people that losing weight doesn’t have to mean a diet of just lettuce leaves – it can be exciting, flavoursome curry nights. In fact, with Curry Club, every night can be curry night!”

Oliver Maxey, Cookbook Editor at Slimming World, said: “People don’t want to have to fit their lives around a weight-loss plan; they want the weight-loss plan to fit around their lives! We pride ourselves on listening and responding to feedback – so when members asked for more single-serving recipes, we gladly took up the challenge! This collection of dishes is perfect when cooking just for you – but can also easily be scaled up when entertaining friends and family."

Ideal for students, busy mums, those who live alone or just people who fancy a little ‘me’ time, Meals for One features a range of delicious recipes, as well as a handy section on batch cooking.

What’s more, there’s an inventive chapter on batch cooking featuring three ‘master’ recipes, which takes a staple dish (such as BBQ pulled chicken) and shows the reader three clever twists for each one. </pp:boilerplate>

Exclusively available in Iceland stores across the UK and online at www.iceland.co.uk now, the 13 new additions are packed with delicious, comforting ingredients that are perfect for this time of year. The seven new ready meals include Cottage pie, Chicken saag and Three-bean and roasted vegetable chilli, plus soups such as Spicy lentil and Tomato and basil as well as tasty cooking sauces join the range.

The success of the Slimming World range, which arrived in Iceland stores in February this year, has seen a record-breaking number of meals and meat products – meatballs, sausages and burgers – purchased by Slimming World members as well as shoppers who simply want to eat more healthily.

Allison Brentnall, Slimming World Food & Publications Manager, says: “Cooking from scratch at home with healthy ingredients will always remain at the heart of Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan*. However, we do understand that sometimes in the real world there are times when you are just too busy and it’s not always possible to create healthy, filling meals from scratch. What we’ve developed with Iceland is a back-up plan for exactly those times.

“Now our members can enjoy a nutritious, balanced meal ready to cook straight from the freezer in minutes, instead of opting for something that doesn’t fill them up or give them the best weight loss results. Our members have told us that these meals are ‘lifesavers’ and help them to stay on track when they might have struggled before, plus because they’re tasty as well as healthy they’re popular with the whole family.”

Made with premium quality, natural ingredients, the Slimming World meals at Iceland are different from other so-called ‘diet’ foods. Each one is generously portioned (up to 550g), delicious and supremely satisfying. The meals feature the recipe on the packaging enabling shoppers to make the dish at home themselves when they have more time, too.

Salt, fat and sugar levels are carefully balanced, and herbs and spices from around the globe deliver plenty of taste. What’s more, the #PowerofFrozen enables Iceland to lock in nutrients and flavour, preserving the ingredients at their peak, delivering a product that is fresher than fresh.

The range complements Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan which encourages members to eat satisfying everyday foods, known as Free Foods, which are naturally lower in energy density (calories per gram) and include fruit and veg, pasta, rice, potatoes, lean meat, fish, poultry, eggs, fat-free dairy and more. As well as picking up their Slimming World ready meals, sauces and soups, Iceland shoppers can also stock up on plenty of essential Free Foods including lean chicken breasts, North Atlantic prawns and frozen fruit and veg.

The full Slimming World range now includes 15 ready meals, four meat products, four soups and two sauces. Ready meals and meat products are priced £3/€3.75 and the sauces and soups are £1.50/€2 each. The new additions are on sale in Iceland stores from today (October 7th) in the UK and October 10th in the Republic of Ireland.

<pp:quotes><pp:quote>

And now Slimming World’s Little Book of Summer is set to make the season even better by helping readers enjoy their slimmest summer ever.

</pp:summary><pp:boilerplate>
Slimming World was founded by Margaret Miles-Bramwell (OBE, FRSA) in 1969. There are now more than 18,000 groups held weekly across the UK and Republic of Ireland via a network of 4,000 community-based Slimming World Consultants, who receive specific training in the role of diet and physical activity in weight management, as well as sophisticated behaviour-change techniques.

Slimming World’s healthy eating plan, Food Optimising, is based on the science of satiety and energy density. Our phased activity programme, Body Magic, eases members into activity until it becomes an intrinsic part of their daily routine. The principles behind Slimming World’s philosophy are based on a deep understanding of the challenges faced by overweight people and a recognition that those who struggle with weight carry a double burden, the weight itself and a burden of guilt and shame about their weight. Slimming World’s programme integrates practical, up-to-date advice with a highly developed support system based on care and compassion, and Consultant training focuses on facilitating behaviour change in a warm and friendly group environment. Consultant training is delivered through the Slimming World Academy. Slimming World also invests in a comprehensive research programme to develop its support for long-term weight management. The group support provided by Slimming World is recognised as effective by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) and the NHS.

</pp:boilerplate>

The new handy handbag-sized book is loaded with recipes that are all specially designed for both warmer weather and wonderful weight losses. Whether slimmers are planning a brilliant barbecue, packing the perfect picnic or looking for lighter desserts, they’ll find the inspiration they need to enjoy every occasion and still slim in this new collection.

The summer months can be a difficult time for slimmers because normal routines are disrupted with holidays, the kids are off school and everyone’s busy enjoying days out, meaning it can feel harder than usual to eat healthily and fit in activity.

However, this book is full of delicious recipes, based on Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan, to help slimmers stay on track whatever they’ve got planned and show people that they don’t need to miss out on any summer fun.

Slimming World’s plan fits in around slimmers, rather than them having to fit their life around the plan, and unlike other weight-loss plans the focus is on all the fabulous foods you can enjoy – including barbecue and picnic favourites – instead of what you can’t have.

The collection includes more than 60 recipes including mouth-watering meals, light bites, ice-cold desserts and drinks. So whether readers are tucking into Surf and Turf Skewers with fresh ketchup, Rustic potato salad or Cherry cheesecake in a jar (or all three!), they’re guaranteed their tastiest – and trimmest – summer ever. The recipes are all easy enough to suit all cooking abilities and each one is accompanied by a photo of the finished article to tempt the tastebuds and help inspire novice cooks.

</pp:boilerplate>

Commenting on the launch of the food range, Slimming World’s Head of Nutrition and Research, Dr Jacquie Lavin says: “Slimming World’s fundamental goal has always been to help its members develop new healthy eating habits and a new relationship with food, away from high-fat, high-calorie fast foods. Our 4,000 Consultants encourage members to cook from scratch, using everyday foods that you can buy in any supermarket and we have a huge library of recipes in publications and online. Cooking healthy, filling meals from scratch is, and always will be, at the heart of Food Optimising.

“However, with today’s modern, busy lifestyles there are times when even the best-laid plans to prepare healthy home-cooked meals can be scuppered and our members tell us it’s when time is short that they’re most likely to go off track. That’s when they end up grabbing a ready meal that leaves them unsatisfied or having a high-calorie takeaway, because they didn’t have a convenient, delicious, healthy meal to hand. For many years our members have been asking us to bring out a food range that fits with our eating plan and we’ve always resisted. Until now we’ve never been able to find a partner who could help us to develop meals using Free Foods and deliver great value for money together with premium quality – two principles on which we won’t compromise.”

Setting out to transform the face of ‘diet’ meals with its Free Food approach, Slimming World has now created a food range that is generously portioned, delicious and great value. The weight management organisation has teamed up with leading frozen food innovator Iceland – one of the few manufacturers that could offer the quality, value and generosity Slimming World expects for its members.

Nigel Broadhurst, Iceland Joint Managing Director, says: “Due to both Slimming World and Iceland’s high standards, the meals have been in development for more than a year. From sourcing a bespoke lean beef for our beef dish, to trying dozens of different marinated chicken pieces for tikka masala, both firms have gone much more than the extra mile – we’ve literally gone across the globe – to ensure every meal uses high-quality ingredients, is packed with tasty ingredients and offers great value for money.

“The meals are frozen because the natural process of freezing means that all of the great flavours have been locked in. They are frozen as soon as they’ve been made so they stay in peak condition. As a result, every one of the 10 products in the range is full of the flavour of a home-cooked meal. They’re in a generous portion size too,” he adds.

Slimming World invests millions into weight management research including the science which underpins its Food Optimising eating plan. The plan is based on the principles of energy density, and encourages members to base their diet on satisfying everyday foods that are naturally lower in energy density (calories per gram) – Slimming World calls these ‘Free Foods’, and they include foods like poultry, fish, lean meat, eggs, pulses, pasta, rice, potatoes, fruit, vegetables and fat-free dairy products.

“By introducing this food range that’s based on Food Optimising and Free Foods we’re confident that we are helping members to succeed in their long term weight management. Every meal has the recipe printed on the packaging too, so consumers who may be nervous about trying new foods or testing their cooking skills are encouraged to try to recreate the meals at home when they have time,” adds Dr Jacquie.

The meals can either be eaten for one, or shared for a lighter meal, and are designed to be eaten with plenty of added veg for extra filling power, in line with the principles of Food Optimising. The packaging stays true to Slimming World’s high standards and production values and each beautifully photographed meal comes in a 450-550g pack. The brand-new range of Slimming World meals is available exclusively in Iceland’s 850 stores from 18 February, priced at £3 per meal, and is also available to order online at Iceland.co.uk. The meals will be on sale in the Republic of Ireland from 21 February, at €3 each.

<pp:quotes><pp:quote>
