  • This study investigated, via a member website based questionnaire, how Slimming World members with diabetes fit advice given to them by their health professionals into the Slimming World eating plan, Food Optimising. It found that the majority of repsondents find it either 'very easy' or 'quite easy' to fit their personal advice into the eating plan due to its flexibilty, and that attending Slimming World and following Food Optimising can be beneficial for both weight loss and diabetes management.

  • In a 24 week referral project for patients with learning difficulties an average attendance of 19 weeks produced an average: reduction in BMI of 1.6Kg/m2; weight change on -4.2Kg; and percent weight change of -4.4%. Slimming World on Referral is an effective option for helping people with learning difficulties to manage their weight.

  • This abstract details the responses (member and non-member) to a Slimming World magazine questionnaire investigating how being aware of and following the Slimming World eating and exercise plans affects family life.
  • Over 80% of respondents had experienced an improvement in health and >33% saw an improvement in the health of their families, with most stating an increase in physical activity and almost half stating increased family activity.
  • Slimming World has beneficial affects on diet, activity and health and people accessing Slimming World services disseminate positive behavioural change to their families.

Bye C.J, Lavin J.H, Whybrow S. and Stubbs R.J. 2006. What characteristics underlie successful weight loss? Proceedings of the Nutrition Society. 65, p92.

What characteristics underlie successful weight loss?

  • This study examined, through means of questionnaires, food diaries and activity monitors, whether differences exist between “successful” and “less successful” slimmers.
  • It found that successful slimmers reported lower daily energy intake and lower percentage intakes of fat.  Differences in activity levels were not significant.
  • It was concluded that more successful slimmers have a higher level of diet pre-occupation, suggesting that they have a greater awareness of the nutritional composition of foods that leads them to make healthier food choices than the less successful slimmers.

  • This abstract shows that not only can a significant percentage of patients enrolled on Slimming World on Referral lose 5-10% of body weight but mental well-being is significantly improved by this scheme.

What factors are more likely to make new Slimming World members have successful weight loss?

  • Through means of questionnaire to new members and use of Slimming World data, the factors that affect successful weight loss were investigated.
  • The study showed that targets for 5-10% weight loss for health improvement can be achieved in commercial slimming groups. Compliance to the Slimming World plan coupled with early weight loss success and family support seem to be key elements in achieving success in a commercial setting.

Slimming World groups have the expertise and experience to help in behaviour change. They are also another brick in the wall of social support that is necessary to tackle obesity in the UK.
