For many people, walking is a simple form of exercise to incorporate into daily life, and it uses many of the main muscle groups. Best of all, it’s free and you can do it straight from your front door! Shagufta (@shagufta_lifestyle) can rack up 15K by walking along her local canal towpath, and she gets plenty of mood-boosting fresh air along the way.

Spring-clean at home

Ticking some household chores off your to-do list will pack plenty of activity into your day. Whether you’re giving the house a vigorous clean from top to bottom (don’t forget to scrub the windows!) or raking up the leaves in your garden, sprucing up your home will get many muscles working and give you a full-body workout.

Take a stand

Getting up and moving around regularly has all sorts of health benefits – including improving your metabolism and boosting your weight loss. Every 20 minutes, take a break from sitting still and move for a minute. A walk to the printer or kettle, a lap of the room, or even a dance in front of the TV will take you another stride further along the activity pathway.

Find an online workout

There are lots of fun exercise videos online right now and it shouldn’t take too much searching to find something that works for you. Katie (@katieemmahope) has been trying out at-home yoga during lockdown, or, if you’re looking for a full-body workout, our 10-minute exercise routine is suitable for all fitness levels and short enough to squeeze into the busiest day. If you’re physically less able, a chair-based workout could be a great way for you to get active.

Walk to school

Now that children are back in the classroom, the school run is an ideal opportunity to weave some fitness into your morning. A brisk walk to school three times a week will set you well on your way to achieving your first Body Magic award (ask your local Consultant for more information). If walking isn’t your thing, how’s about dusting off your bike or investing in an adult scooter to help you whizz through the morning traffic?

Wash the car

Make the most of the spring sunshine and save money by giving your car a full valet by hand. A thorough cleaning, with lots of scrubbing, drying, waxing and vacuuming – plus numerous trips to the sink to refill your bucket – will get your heart beating faster and give your muscles a great workout.

Bring a dog

A four-legged friend can be a great motivator to move more. If you don’t have a dog, you could borrow a neighbour’s (we’re sure they’d appreciate it) or set off for a brisk stroll across fields minus the canine companion – either way, you’ll get plenty of steps into your day. Slimming World Consultant Sue Park can clock up over four miles at a time with her faithful friend Bailey by her side.
