Slimming World sends vital supplies to hospice and food bank

Slimming World’s head office staff have donated personal protective equipment (PPE) and healthy fresh food to show their support for healthcare professionals and food banks during the Coronavirus outbreak.

The vital supplies have been donated by the Alfreton-based organisation’s in-house salon and restaurant teams.

Employees from Hair & Beauty at Slimming World, which is based on site at Slimming World’s headquarters on Clover Nook Road and open to the public, have donated two boxes of face masks to staff and volunteers at St. Luke’s Hospice in Sheffield, which treats and cares for patients with terminal illnesses.

Meanwhile, staff in the restaurant team delivered more than 300 food items including fresh fruit, vegetables and fat-free yogurts that would have been used to create healthy meals for the company’s employees to local food bank Under One Roof based in Hucknall, Nottinghamshire.

In line with government guidance, both teams are now safely staying at home in order to protect the NHS and save lives.

Slimming World’s Head of HR and Organisational Development Lyn Green says: “Now, more than ever, we know just how just important it is for communities to come together. We’re in awe of the amazing work that key workers are doing in these challenging times, so when we saw the appeals for help from both St Luke’s Hospice and Under One Roof we were keen to show our support however we could and ensure nothing goes to waste right now. This is just a small token of our appreciation.”

Jo Lenton, St. Luke’s Director of Care and Lead for Healthcare Partnerships, adds: “As we continue to maintain our excellent levels of service for the people of Sheffield this kind of support is invaluable. The whole team would like to thank Hair & Beauty at Slimming World for thinking of us at this difficult time and they can be assured that their donation makes an enormous difference.”

About Slimming World

Slimming World was founded by Margaret Miles-Bramwell (OBE, FRSA) in 1969. There are now more than 19,000 weekly groups supporting 900,000 members across the UK and Republic of Ireland. Groups are run by a network of 5,000 community-based Slimming World Consultants, who receive specific training in the role of diet and physical activity in weight management, as well as sophisticated behaviour-change techniques. Slimming World’s healthy eating plan, Food Optimising, is based on the science of satiety and energy density. Our phased activity programme, Body Magic, eases members into activity until it becomes an intrinsic part of their daily routine. The principles behind Slimming World’s philosophy are based on a deep understanding of the challenges faced by people who are overweight and recognition that those who struggle with weight carry a double burden, the weight itself and a burden of guilt and shame about their weight. Slimming World’s programme integrates practical, up-to-date advice with a highly developed support system based on care and compassion, and Consultant training focuses on facilitating, encouraging and empowering members to make changes in a supportive, warm and friendly group environment. Consultant training is delivered through the Slimming World Academy. Slimming World also invests in a comprehensive research programme to develop its support for long-term weight management. The group support provided by Slimming World is recognised as effective by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and the NHS.
