Slimming World staff raise £2.5k for Children’s Hospital Burns Unit

Slimming World has raised £2,562 for Sheffield Children’s Hospital Burns Unit, after its 350 head office staff voted for the charity to benefit from their annual festive raffle.

All of the funds raised by Slimming World employees will go to Theo’s Burns Club, a charity set up to support children who receive treatment the Burns Unit at Sheffield Children’s Hospital. The club enables children who have had a burn injury to learn to deal with their scarring and treatment. They organise specialised camps where they can meet other children with injuries and take part in activities including bowling nights, swimming sessions, Christmas parties and days out.

Staff at Slimming World’s headquarters, which is situated on Clover Nook Industrial Estate, Alfreton, raised the exceptional amount by buying raffle tickets throughout December. Many of the prizes were kindly donated by generous Derbyshire businesses* including The School House in South Normanton, The Derbyshire Hotel and Owen Taylors butchers in Alfreton, while Hair & Beauty at Slimming World, the company’s own on-site salon, also donated prizes. Prizes included afternoon tea at the Ritz in London, an Apple watch and a laptop.

Catherine Fox, Slimming World’s Marketing Manager, says: “Our employees have big hearts. When we asked them which charity they’d like to support in our annual festive raffle, they voted in their masses to support Theo’s Burns Club. I’m so proud to say we have raised such a phenomenal amount that will make a real difference to young people and their families at a very difficult time.

“We’re passionate about our role in the community – from employing local people, to working with nearby businesses and supporting charities in and around the area. We’re really grateful to be able to work with such fantastic businesses throughout the year and we are ever-grateful for the prizes they contributed to help raise the money to support this worthwhile cause.”

This extremely generous donation will be used to fund activities and events for all the members of Theo's Burns Club and will be invaluable in supporting children and their families following a burns injury.”

Notes to Editors

Slimming World was founded by Margaret Miles-Bramwell (OBE, FRSA) in 1969. There are now more than 18,000 groups held weekly across the UK and Republic of Ireland via a network of 4,000 community-based Slimming World Consultants, who receive specific training in the role of diet and physical activity in weight management, as well as sophisticated behaviour-change techniques.

Slimming World’s healthy eating plan, Food Optimising, is based on the science of satiety and energy density. Our phased activity programme, Body Magic, eases members into activity until it becomes an intrinsic part of their daily routine. The principles behind Slimming World’s philosophy are based on a deep understanding of the challenges faced by overweight people and a recognition that those who struggle with weight carry a double burden, the weight itself and a burden of guilt and shame about their weight. Slimming World’s programme integrates practical, up-to-date advice with a highly developed support system based on care and compassion, and Consultant training focuses on facilitating behaviour change in a warm and friendly group environment. Consultant training is delivered through the Slimming World Academy. Slimming World also invests in a comprehensive research programme to develop its support for long-term weight management. The group support provided by Slimming World is recognised as effective by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) and the NHS.
