Slimming World’s Golden Clothes Throw raises £3.6million in two weeks
The Big Golden Slimming World Clothes Throw has raised £3.2million for Cancer Research UK and €320,000 for the Irish Cancer Society.
The event invited Slimming World members to celebrate their weight losses by donating the clothes that no longer fit them – and that they know they won’t need again – to Cancer Research UK and the Irish Cancer Society.
The campaign, which ran over two weeks in May and is now in its seventh year, went Gold this year to celebrate Slimming World’s 50th anniversary. Slimmers who took part were in with a chance of winning a personal styling experience and shopping trip in London if they found a special golden bag to donate their clothes in.
Each filled bag could be worth around £25/, or more with Gift Aid, and the campaign has now raised more than £15m since it launched in 2013. The money raised for Cancer Research UK helps fund research into cancers related to obesity with the goal to accelerate the understanding of the links between weight and cancer.
In recognition of its fundraising efforts, Slimming World was recently presented with a Special Achievement Award by Cancer Research UK’s chief executive, Michelle Mitchell.
Clare Lee, who manages the national campaign from Slimming World HQ in Derbyshire, says: “We’re absolutely over the moon to have broken the £3million barrier this year. We’re determined to do everything we can to help people lead healthier lives, so helping fund Cancer Research UK at the same time as helping people to lose weight is really rewarding.
“At Slimming World, we support our members to lose weight through long-term, healthy lifestyle changes and encourage them to become more active which helps reduce cancer risk. We know from our members that this is a cause close to their hearts and so we’re all hugely committed to supporting the work of Cancer Research UK and the Irish Cancer Society. Having such a dedicated and engaged group of members, Consultants and head office staff makes it all so much easier to achieve.”
The money raised through the Big Golden Slimming World Clothes Throw will help us continue our pioneering research to beat cancer.
Caro Evans, director of partnerships at Cancer Research UK said: “Raising over £3million worth of clothes is a fantastic achievement and we thank everyone who cleared out their wardrobes and generously donated clothes. The money raised through the Big Golden Slimming World Clothes Throw will help us continue our pioneering research to beat cancer.”

About Slimming World
Slimming World was founded by Margaret Miles-Bramwell (OBE, FRSA) in 1969. There are now more than 19,000 weekly groups supporting 900,000 members across the UK and Republic of Ireland. Groups are run by a network of 5,500 community-based Slimming World Consultants, who receive specific training in the role of diet and physical activity in weight management, as well as sophisticated behaviour-change techniques. Slimming World’s healthy eating plan, Food Optimising, is based on the science of satiety and energy density. Our phased activity programme, Body Magic, eases members into activity until it becomes an intrinsic part of their daily routine. The principles behind Slimming World’s philosophy are based on a deep understanding of the challenges faced by overweight people and recognition that those who struggle with weight carry a double burden, the weight itself and a burden of guilt and shame about their weight. Slimming World’s programme integrates practical, up-to-date advice with a highly developed support system based on care and compassion, and Consultant training focuses on facilitating behaviour change in a warm and friendly group environment. Consultant training is delivered through the Slimming World Academy. Slimming World also invests in a comprehensive research programme to develop its support for long-term weight management. The group support provided by Slimming World is recognised as effective by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) and the NHS.
