Slimming World celebrates another successful year sponsoring Race for Life

To celebrate another successful year sponsoring Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life series, staff at the Derbyshire-based Slimming World HQ turned the local woods pink by embarking on a group trek.

The employees, who work within a variety of departments at the company’s head office including marketing, IT, nutrition, design, and product distribution, came together at a walk of their own to recognise their achievements at local Race for Life events as well as the company’s long-term partnership with Cancer Research UK.

2024 was a record-breaking year for Slimming World’s Body Magic fundraiser. This summer, Slimming World members, Consultants and Head Office staff raised more than £1.2 million for Cancer Research UK!

Bethany Hayes, Senior Marketing Co-ordinator at Slimming World, says: “It was brilliant to see plenty of our colleagues dressed in pink and enjoying the walk. It reflects the friendly and supportive atmosphere found at Race for Life events, where it doesn’t matter if you walk, jog or run the course, as long as you have fun!

Many of the team have taken part in their local Race for Life event and brought their medals along to celebrate their successes.

Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life is an inspiring series of 3k, 5k, 10k, Pretty Muddy and Pretty Muddy Kids events which raise millions of pounds every year to help beat cancer by funding crucial research. Slimming World are, for the second year running, proud sponsors of Race for Life and have encouraged Consultants, members, and staff to sign up to their local events and raise money for the charity as well as encouraging them to move more by picking an event to match their activity level.

Alongside Race for Life, Slimming World supports Cancer Research UK through a variety of activities including The Big Slimming World Clothes Throw and the Slimming World London Marathon Team. The organisations recently came together to celebrate Slimming World raising more than £20m for the charity.

The Race for Life events ran from 4 May to 28 July 2024 and throughout this time, Slimming World members have been preparing for their events by sharing fundraising tips, training together and cheering each other on every step of the way.

Bethany adds: “We take pride in our work to support Cancer Research UK, a cause close to many of our colleagues’, members’ and Consultants’ hearts. Through our work with the charity, as well as fundraising, we hope to raise awareness that maintaining a healthy weight improves health, including the risk of developing some types of cancer.”

Alex Crouch, Partnership Manager at Cancer Research UK, said: “As always, we are so grateful to everyone at Slimming World who took part in Race for Life this year. Through the support and commitment of Slimming World Consultants and members, together, we are beating cancer. Thanks in part to money raised through events such as Race for Life, our research led to the development of the HPV vaccine, which is expected to prevent almost 90% of cervical cancers in the UK. With continued support, Cancer Research UK can continue to fund research to help prevent cancer”

About Slimming World

Slimming World was founded by Margaret Miles-Bramwell OBE in Derbyshire in 1969 and has become the UK and Ireland’s leading weight loss organisation with more people choosing to attend a Slimming World group each week than any other weight loss programme. We support hundreds of thousands of people, both in our groups and online, to lose weight and to adopt new habits to stay slim for life.

Over the years our founding principles haven’t changed:

  • Our unique programme is based on a powerfully motivating support system called IMAGE (Individual Motivation and Group Experience) Therapy. Underpinned by a deep understanding of the psychology of people living with overweight and obesity, and incorporating the most effective sustainable behaviour change techniques, IMAGE Therapy is designed to inspire and motivate slimmers to make positive mindset changes and to develop new, healthier habits around food and activity.
  • Food Optimising is our healthy eating plan, based on the liberating concept of Free Food. We encourage members to fill up on those foods that are naturally lower in energy density (calories per gram) and also highly satisfying while limiting foods that are highest in fat and sugar and are less satisfying, so they lose weight without ever feeling hungry or deprived and without having to weigh, measure or count everything they eat.
  • Our physical activity support programme, Body Magic helps members to overcome any barriers around exercise. Members choose when to start and they set the pace, finding activities they genuinely enjoy, until regular physical activity becomes an intrinsic part of their daily routine.

At the heart of everything we do lies our passion for treating every member with genuine care, empathy and respect.

We’re proud to work with the NHS, the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities (OHID), The Royal College of Midwives, Diabetes UK and others to help shape the future of weight management in the UK and Ireland.
