I love Slimming World because... I'm running marathons!
Two years ago, Slimming World Consultant Matthew Briggs from York lost 17st 7lbs* and took up jogging to boost his Body Magic! He took part in the London Marathon in April 2013 and more recently he completed the New York marathon - nothing can stop him! Read his story here...
“I’ve battled with my weight ever since my teens and I put on more weight when my mum was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Being the eldest, I became her main carer and we relied on convenience food and takeaways. I also started comfort eating to cope. Then in March 2000, just a month before my 18th birthday, and after 6 months of progressively getting worse, my mum passed away.”
“Over the next 10 years I put on even more weight. One Christmas my step-mum tagged me in some photos on Facebook. I looked huge! When my dad asked me the million dollar question: ‘Are you happy?’ I had to admit that I wasn’t. I pretty much woke up, went to work, came home and slept. If I went out to bars and clubs with friends I always felt uncomfortable. I wanted to change but I didn’t know how!
"In January 2010 I went along with my step-mum to our local Slimming World group. I sat through the New Member Talk and couldn’t help but think ‘wow – this all sounds too good to be true! And it wasn’t, I lost 12½lbs in my first week!
Going to group and sharing ideas in IMAGE Therapy brought me out of my shell and helped me rediscover a love of cooking. I love tuna and spinach omelettes and chicken stir-fries. My signature dish is homemade chicken curry and rice. I snack on lots of fresh fruit during the day and love strawberries dipped in melted chocolate.
“My family and friends have nicknamed me the ‘Duracell Bunny’ as I’m always on the go! I started by parking my car a mile away from work and walking there and back, before taking up cycling, running and joining a gym. Last April I cycled 50km for charity – I was so proud when I finished in under two hours. I also climbed Ben Nevis with friends last summer and I was part of Slimming World's London Marathon team in April.
“I love life now. I’m happier and healthier than ever before. I'm running the New York Marathon later this year in memory of my mum. I inherited many of my qualities from her. She used all her strength and determination until the end to try and fight her disease, and that is what I used as part of my weight loss journey."
