“I’m on a weekend away with my wife, Karen. I should be enjoying a well-earned break. Yet something’s been weighing heavily on my mind — I’d been mulling it over all morning as Karen and I wandered around the local shops. ‘It’s these new fitness tests they’re introducing for work.’ I said. ‘I know it’s a couple of years away, but I honestly don’t think I’ll pass. I’m much bigger than when I first joined the force and I do no exercise…if I’m not fit enough, I could lose my job.’
“As a serving officer of more than 20 years, I couldn’t imagine doing anything else. I tried not to think about it too much, and then something happened that brought it into focus. We’d popped into an outdoors shop to buy a fleece, but for the first time in my life, I found myself zipping up an XL. I’d never been this big before. I felt like my future was in the balance.
“Later that evening, Karen took the initiative – ‘I’m going to join Slimming World,’ she told me. ‘Why don’t you come with me?’ I responded that I couldn’t see how I could right now - working shifts in my role as a sergeant means there’s no guarantee I’ll be able to go to the same group each week. ‘’How about you go to group and I follow the plan with you at home?’ I said ‘If we’re eating more healthily I’m bound to lose weight too, aren’t I?’

“It’s amazing! I’m eating such tasty, filling food and the weight’s dropping off me. Karen’s serving up all the things I love – curries, pasta dishes and slap-up Sunday roasts – all with a third of a plate of Speed vegetables.
I haven’t felt hungry or short-changed by these new dinners – in fact, I think I like them more.
"And, even better, my size-38 uniform trousers are getting so much more comfortable around the waist. Both Karen and I are feeling and looking so much better – however, I still don’t think going to group is for me.

“I can’t quite believe it. I’ve just completed a run with Karen. Admittedly, I felt totally out of puff afterwards, but I still managed to finish and it feels like the start of something good. ‘We call it Body Magic at group.’ Karen explained as we puffed down the road. ‘If you do exercise alongside the plan, it can help everything speed up – and we’ll feel incredible, too.’ I was feeling pretty pleased with our run – let’s see if we can go further next time.

“We’ve been running together for months now, each time gradually increasing our distance, and there really is no stopping us. Karen and I have even joined Biddulph Running Club as we want to take our fitness to the next level. We’re now doing two five-mile runs a week – the weight is falling off Karen and she’s looking fantastic – she’s certainly my role model. Our 21-year-old son, Michael’s joining us on our bike rides, too, which is great. It feels good that we’re motivating him to be more active.

“We’re competing in our first half-marathon and as we stand here with other runners I put my arm around Karen and give her a squeeze – it’s hard to believe that just two years ago I was feeling so worried about that fitness test. Since, I’ve lost 4st and Karen is 6st 7lbs lighter – we look like new people!

“Today I faced my fears and went for my fitness test. I passed! If Karen hadn’t introduced me to a new way of life, healthy meals and exercise, I know that test would’ve been beyond me. There’s still something worrying me though – after a year of maintaining my weight, I’ve gained nearly a stone…

“I think I’ve become a bit complacent with the plan – I’ve gained 1st 7lbs and I know if I don’t get back on it, I’ll be needing an XL fleece again. I’m determined to stop that happening. I’m 50 next year and want to be fit before I reach that milestone. Karen’s gone from strength to strength – and she’s become a Consultant.
“I want to shift some of the weight by August 2015 – because that’s when my son Michael’s getting married. I’ve decided to join my wife’s group for extra support.

“Michael emerges from his dressing room just as I pull the curtain back on mine – he’s looking trim in his navy, tailored suit he’s chosen for his wedding day, and I’m amazed at how good my matching suit is looking. ‘You’re still not as slim as me, Dad.’ Michael joked.
“Joining Karen’s group has made a world of difference – it seems odd to me now how uneasy I felt about going. I suppose I was worried about being the only man, though I soon saw that didn’t matter. It’s helped me make good choices – I’m going to be slim, smart and confident for Michael’s special day.

“I reached target last month and I’ve just turned 50…and guess what I was doing last week? I completed a 500m swim, a 20km bike ride and a 5km run, finishing 84th out of 244 competitors. I’ve just hit my half-century and I’m fitter than I’ve ever been.

“As my two-year-old granddaughter, Lola, scampers across the soft play area, I chase after her… I even follow her down the slide! I’m reminded just how important being slim and fit is outside of work – being an active grandfather is so rewarding.
