When I weighed more than 26st (165.1kg), I felt like life was happening around me. I was constantly exhausted – even everyday things like running around after my children and doing my work as a manager at Screwfix drained my energy. I’ve always loved comedy, and was excited to launch my comedy promotion company, Chuckl – but my weight and my mindset held me back.

The trigger for change

Then my health started to decline, and I knew it was time to take action. I’d developed sleep apnoea, which became so bad that my wife, Jenni, was worried that one day I just wouldn’t wake up. I have three amazing children – Kayden, 14, Izzy, 12, and Asher, six – and I wanted to be around to watch them grow up. With a new motivation, I found my nearest Slimming World group – and I didn’t look back!

My group has played such a massive part in my journey. Each week we share our challenges, plans and ideas, and I always leave feeling ready for the next seven days. I started out by joining a room full of strangers, and now I have this big bunch of supportive friends who cheer me on every step of the way.

Creating healthy routines

Initially I just wanted to feel more in control of my eating habits, but the more weight I lost, the more my whole life changed. Slimming World’s healthy eating plan helped me reset my approach to mealtimes. It wasn’t about restriction – it was about making smarter choices with real food. Instead of relying on convenience items and quick snacks, I began preparing dishes that left me feeling full and energised.

Before, I’d usually skip breakfast, grab something fried or processed at lunchtime and then rely on takeaways most evenings. Now, I make big, hearty meals at home – things like tasty curries and roast dinners with lean meat. I also meal-prep, so I always have something healthy and filling for long days at work or when I’m on the road. My children help me in the kitchen and I love that I’m passing healthy habits on to them, too.

Moving more in everyday life

Becoming more active was the next step, and I’d heard other people in group talking about the regular activity they did. At first, walking around the block felt like a marathon. But I started small by getting my steps in at lunchtime and walking with the kids – and it gradually became part of my routine. Now, we go on weekend bike rides and I can spend all day on my feet without a problem. I’ve also started regular sessions with my friend who’s a personal trainer, and that’s taken things to another level – I’m feeling fitter and stronger. Being an active dad means the world to me. Before, I’d sit on the sidelines, and these days I’m the one leading the games.

A bright future

I’m more than 12st slimmer, and my life has completely changed. At Screwfix, I manage a team and lead on wellbeing – I feel like I’m strong example to others now. I know what it’s like to struggle with low energy and a lack of motivation, and supporting people to make positive changes is something I’m passionate about.

My comedy business, Chuckl, is going from strength to strength. I always had the ambition, but not the confidence or energy. This year, my business partner, Harrison, and I went up to Edinburgh for the Fringe festival, attending shows and scouting for up-and-coming comedians to add to our books. We covered miles across the (very hilly!) city, with long days spent on our feet, and I thoroughly enjoyed myself.

Looking back at photos, I barely recognise myself. I’m still the same person, but now I’m present in the moment. My business is flourishing, my team at Screwfix is thriving – and, most importantly, my three kids have the dad they deserve. It just shows what’s possible when you start believing in yourself and surround yourself with the right support.

Winning the title of Slimming World’s Man of the Year 2025 is just the cherry on top. Slimming World didn’t only change my health and my habits, it gave me the life I’ve always dreamed of.
