‘I stepped up my self-belief’
6st* lighter, Carolyn Goss, 48, from Dunblane, Perthshire, is loving her new-found confidence. Read her story here.
“When I started working as an assistant Registrar in 2007, I was in denial about my ever-increasing weight problem. As size 16s and 18s grew too tight, I'd blame mean clothing manufacturers, not the amount of fatty food I ate and the wine I washed it down with.
“My weight affected my health, too. I was constantly out of breath, suffered heartburn after every meal, and felt far more exhausted than a 41-year-old should. I also had a problem with over-perspiration, which caused me a lot of embarrassment and made me prefer the parts of my job where I'd be out of the public eye.
“One day in 2009, I received a thank-you note from a newlywed couple enclosing a picture taken during their ceremony. Although the focus of the photograph wasn't on me, I looked so big in it I hardly recognised myself. I didn't know what to do. I'd dieted before and regained the weight immediately.
“My stepmother had joined Slimming World and convinced me to join too, which I did in February 2010. Although discovering my weight was a shock, once I'd recovered enough to understand the Extra Easy plan, I realised it was exactly what I needed – not a diet, just a common-sense lifestyle change to enable me to enjoy my favourite foods and a couple of glasses of wine.
Within three months my heartburn had cleared up, the wheezing and perspiration were gone, and I'd reached my Club 10 target.
“Over the next three years I lost weight slowly and steadily, and I reached my target of 10st 10lbs in July 2013. During this time, I realised I'd kept myself in the background when I was overweight and decided to train and gain the Certificate of Proficiency in the Law and Practice of Registration.
“Weddings, civil partnerships and birth registrations are a highlight, but I'm also there when loved ones have died. Before losing weight, I don't think I'd have felt equal to the task of dealing with people at such a stressful time in their lives. Having tackled my own weight issues, I've gained much more self-belief. I don't avoid face-to-face contact these days. I now feel I can offer professional support for the bad times as well as helping celebrate the good.”
