Michael's made it!
Michael Drucker from Edgware lost nearly 14 stones* to transform his life and discovered an inspiring new career as a Slimming World Consultant. This Sunday he'll be running the London Marathon for Cancer Research UK. Read his story here…
“I was overweight as a child and drastically gained weight when I got married 24 years ago. I’m a high-school teacher and I’d eat peanut butter sandwiches, creamy pasta salads and crisps at my desk and drank countless bottles of coca-cola. At home I grazed on the kids’ leftovers before tucking into a big, home-cooked meal like steak and deep-fried chips.
“To strangers I came across as ‘larger-than-life’ and would confidently crack ‘fat jokes’ about myself (before the pupils could). At my biggest I struggled to put my socks on and I was humiliated by breaking chairs and getting stuck on fairground rides. My son’s wedding should have been one of the best days of my life but I spent the whole time worrying that I was ruining the day. I didn’t feel like I belonged with or deserved my beautiful family. I felt like a useless lump.
“My wife Sharon knew how upset I was and took me along to my local Slimming World. I was petrified and expected to feel humiliated, especially as a man in front of a room of women. Nothing could have been further from the truth. Everyone made me feel welcome; to them I was someone – like them – who needed support to lose weight.
“Food Optimising isn’t like a diet. I can eat massive portions of my favourite foods without weighing, counting or measuring. I’m a big man and I love my food. In fact, I’d say the only similarity between the ‘old’ me and the ‘new’ me is that we both have huge appetites. For breakfast I enjoy weetabix with fat-free yogurt and snack on lots of fresh fruit throughout the day. I still get my caffeine fix by swapping sugary lattes for coffee with skimmed milk and sweetener. Two years ago vegetables weren’t part of my diet, but now my favourite meal is peppered salmon, new potatoes and loads of roasted veggies.
Before I joined Slimming World, I didn’t do any exercise. Now Body Magic is part of my daily life. I walk everywhere, run 40 miles a week and cycle between 20 and 30 miles!
“In just two short years I lost nearly 14 stones* and I gained so much more. I’m brimming with pride in myself, and my family are overflowing with pride in me. I’ve got a great group of new friends through Slimming World and my health is so much better. A friend who I’d not seen for a while said, ‘Wow, you must have added 20 years to your life’. I wanted to make the most of those 20 years so decided to train as a Slimming World Consultant.
“Losing weight has changed my life and helped me discover a confidence that’s real. I now run five groups a week in the Greater and Outer London area, including men-only sessions in Edgware and Golders Green. I love my job, I love my life and I love inspiring people to lose weight and change their life forever – just like I have!
“My mother Helen was diagnosed with cancer in 2011 and underwent chemotherapy. The day before my first marathon in 2012 she was told that she was in remission. On the finishing line we celebrated our new lives, each proud of the other. I signed up for the 2014 Jerusalem marathon and told my mother that again I would see her on the finishing line. That was not to be and in July she sadly passed away. Running the marathon to support such a vital cause is so important to me. I am running in my mother’s memory this year and hope to raise funds to help change people’s lives for the better."
If Michael's story has inspired you and you’d like to support the team you can sponsor them by visiting the Slimming World Marathon team's JustGiving page.
