Kelly's half the girl she was!
21-year-old Kelly Meager, from London lost an incredible 10st 9lbs to transform her life. From insecure and isolated to confident and courageous – read about Kelly’s amazing transformation below.
“At school I was always bigger than the other children, meaning I was a target for school bullies. I was always known as ‘the big one’ and, being tall as well, I couldn’t help but stand out. Kids can be cruel – they just say what they think – and I was bullied a lot, mentally and physically. At secondary school it wasn’t so much physical but they got crueller with their words.
“The embarrassment didn’t stop at school. On a trip to a theme park I was humiliated when I got stuck on a water slide because I was too heavy for the current to carry me. Staff sounded an alarm and stopped the ride. Then, at my GP’s surgery, I was mortified when the cuff of a standard blood pressure monitor was too small for my arm and the nurse had to use one designed for the thigh.
“My weight problem got worse the older I got. I was very dependent on my family; I had just a few close friends and avoided larger groups and social occasions.
“When I started university I felt so insecure, isolated and depressed about my weight. On my first night there we all went to a ‘bin bag party’ and everyone had to make their outfit from a bin bag. But I couldn’t wear one because I couldn’t find a bin bag big enough. That was bad, but when I saw the pictures the next day on Facebook I was horrified – I looked huge. I started refusing offers to go out and my room became my prison. You’re supposed to have the time of your life at uni but I just hid in my room and lived off takeaways.
“I didn’t feel 19. I felt old, overweight and unhealthy. I knew I needed to take control if I was ever going to be happy and make the most of student life.
“My uni friend Emily was a member of Slimming World and said the eating plan was really working, and that it was flexible and gave lots of options. I was really anxious about joining a group as I was so insecure about my weight; however I went along with Emily and soon found that everyone at the group was really friendly and supportive.
With Food Optimising I don’t have to measure or monitor every food I eat – which I love. There’s no living off crackerbreads or salad - I’ve never had to go hungry with this plan. My favourite meal is pasta with chicken, bacon, peppers, red onion and salad - with a Mullerlight yogurt for afters!
“I broke my weight loss down into small targets, eg half a stone at a time, so I didn’t feel daunted and it made it manageable and encouraging. The support from other members at group and my Consultant Sally** always spurred me on.
“When I began to lose weight I found the health problems I had, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, breathing problems and cramps began disappearing. I began to get more active and nowadays I go to the gym regularly.
“Now I’ve lost weight with Slimming World I love fashion, make an effort with my appearance, and socialise more. I’ve dropped seven dress sizes meaning I’ve had to buy a whole new wardrobe. It’s the best feeling when you put on a pair of trousers and they’re loose. It gave me such a confidence boost, especially shopping in high street shops that didn’t stock my size before – and realising that my size isn’t the biggest one on the rail any more! I used to dread shopping and just buy whatever fitted, but now I love it and spend far too much money on clothes!
“With my new found confidence I now plan to train as a teacher, something I’d never have dreamed of at 23½st, and I’ve also found love with my boyfriend-of-ten-months Aaron. If someone had told me 21 months ago that I’d be 10½st lighter I’d never have believed them. I feel like a totally new person. It’s mindblowing to think that I’ve lost more than the weight of my 20-year-old sister. I finally feel young. I’m loving life for the first time ever and have probably added years to my life too so I want to make the most it.”
